The Scott Alan Appreciation Thread...

Anyone love his work as much as I do?

There's something about his music. The songs seems to work well on their own, yet they have that musical feeling about them that also lets them work as pop songs.

I love his old work ("Piece" and "Dreaming Wide Awake") and his newer works ("Keys" and his unreleased songs)...

So, let's share appreciation!
Luc

My Favorites are "Now" and "Hold On" from Still Dreaming Wide Awake Smile

Ugh, why would one create such a thread?

Scott Alan tends to be too pop for most (real, traditional) musical theatre fans and far too musical theatre for most pop listeners. He has a sort of limited appeal which really doesn't work much outside of NY.

His songs are nice the first few times you listen to them - they really are (for the most part) good at eliciting strong emotions. But when you look at it, his lyrics are very amateur, and his music is all over the place.

I enjoy listening to his stuff occasionally, and I think that if he were really able to mentor under somebody, he could one day put out good music. But in the meantime, I skip over his CDs on shuffle.

Dull songwriter. Doesn't contribute or further the musical tradition. And when is actually going to put out a show?
Patch

He's a great character...and sure he was the original golden age Green Lantern and all...but I'll always prefer Hall Jordan.

Oh wait...thought you were talking about Alan Scott...

Piece is premiering in the spring 2010 an hour away from my university.

If mean "show" as in a musical, he's still working on Piece... Didn't Next to Normal take 6 or 7 years to develop?

In terms of a "show"... he does loads of gigs, cabarets, concerts etc.

Had multiple stagings, kept changing.

I'm not counting those.

I like some of his stuff. "Behind These Walls" is a good pop song.

Shows take time to get together... Not all pieces of art are whipped up overnight.
Matthew

Still doesn't change the fact that most of his songs are cliché and shoddily composed.

Love Kyle. I wasn't a fan of when they made him Ion...but now that he's a Leader in the Corps I'm loving him again.

I do?

I don't suppose one uses one of their songs for audition after audition, and then just wakes up one day deciding they DONT like them. Then again, this is YOU we're talking about.
Matthew

Jman383

Yup.

Two years = One morning?

It's one thing to like a song, but to have used it for audition(s) when you were more than competent, and now act as though you now think it's shit? I don't know, there's something weird about that.

Again, it's not like you were 10 and using something from "Annie" for auditions. You were what, 16? 17? You were clearly trying to use something that you thought was not only "brilliant", but good for your voice. And now you think it's crap.

It just seems peculiar, that's all.

My favorites are:
Now
I'm a Star
Say Goodbye
Again
Distance You Have Come
Kiss the Air
The Journey
Felix Felicis

I really really like a lot of Scott's work, but I think his music is repetitive and his lyrics bland. That said, my favourites are:

Now
Never Neverland
Home
Behind These Walls
Watch Me Soar
Kiss the Air

Nah, I wasn't as audition savvy then. I think I probably only ended up using it for one audition as I don't have it in my books anymore. Oops.
Still sucks.
Jman383

Oh.
