The Scarlet Pimpernel? The one song I've heard from this show I liked, but neither my local library or any friends own the cast album, I'd have to buy it. Is it worth looking into?

Depends on which version you'd get, and if you like melodramatic musicals. It's not as gothic-rock as "Jekyll and Hyde," but it's got the same standard Wildhorn-esqu sound.
Some good numbers, and was much more fun to see in NYC than I expected. I was prepared to hate it, but found myself having a good time.

Best Wildhorn show by far. Get either the Encore version or the OBC...DO NOT GET THE LINDA ELDER CONCEPT ALBUM...not good. Pimpernel succeeds where J & H fails...humour. The show is funny but also has some serious songs...yes there are a few cheesy numbers...but there are also some great ones.

I have to admit, however shameful it is on this forum, I love the music in Jekyll & Hyde, though the book is somewhat... lacking.
I'm a slight bit confused though. Amazon lists the two recordings you mentioned, the OBC, and the "Encores" edition. But the Encores one says "Revival Cast Recording" and their both from 1998. Do they have the same actors, songs...?

Pretty much...Wildhorn and what's her name added some songs halfway through the run, which really wasn't a good idea. The Encores recording has a few of the replacements in some of the songs. They have Rex Smith, who replaced Terrance Mann sing Falcon in the Dive, but they also have Terrance singing a few of the songs. None of the songs are repeated though. Really...you are getting all the same stuff on either album but the Encores has the crappy new songs as well. I have Encores and love it.

I was given the recording with terrence mann and christine andreas as a gift and I love it, best cd I have ever been given!

yes. the one with terrance and christine is far superior. rachel york is decent in the encores album..but rex smith is miscast as chauvlin. (he'd be a much better percy) plus the songs arent really in his range so he winds up yelling alot.

I don't know the ins and outs of the different versions of the soundtrack, but I've listened, and what I've heard, I love! The range of songs is very eclectic and very enjoyble to listen to. I have the "Encore" soundtrack and I love the voice of Chauvelain on it (it's late - I can't bring real names to mind XD) - gorgeous!
So yes. Definitely worth getting!

J&H is hilarious. Not intentionally hilarious, but hilarious all the same. Think about it, especially the idea of the Confrontation. A man sings a duet with himself. What's funnier than that?
I snuck up to watch the end of the show at today's performance, and I actually had to stuff my fist in my mouth to keep from laughing during the Confrontation. Our Jekyll/Hyde is so talented, good at Jekyll and absolutely brilliant at being Hyde. It's just the material he's working with is so bad.

That is one of the reasons J&H doesn't work...it isn't meant to be hilarious...and sometimes it is...if you were just to read the libretto is it very serious...there are a lot of problems with J&H but I love it none the less.
The Scarlet Pimpernel works better than J&H in that has several moments, wholse songs even, that are meant to be funny.
