The Rocky Horror Show

... is one of my favorites! I do believe it was on Broadway a while back, and is performed all over the place... I got to see it in August at a local theatre, and it was a lot of fun. At the end of the show, everyone was welcomed to come on the stage and do the Time Warp. (I being one of those people haha)

It's really unlike any musical I had been to, and the best part is the audience and cast reactions. What made the performance I saw great was the fact the actors talked back to the crowd. During the last scene, where Magenta and Riff Raff appear in tacky looking space suits, my friend Trevor yelled out "Hey, Stargate wants their costumes back!" but as he was yelling out, Magenta had just begun to say her line. The guy playing Frank turns and yells back at Trevor, "Shut up and let her finish her ---- line!"

It was such a great moment.

So yeah... just wondering if anyone else likes the show, or has seen it or anything. If anyone hates it, that's fine too.

I have not seen the stage show but I know the film well :I am so old, I saw it was new. It was part of a double feature with a rock and roll film.
We walked out at the end and said that it was either maddness, genius or both !
My theatre may be doing it next fall and I hope to be involved in some capacity.
.....And, yes, it was on Broadway recently with Tom Hewitt as Frank who, among many other things, was Officer Lockstock in the tour of "Urinetown".

I had the pleasure of playing Janet in the show 2 years ago..it was amazing..sold out crowds every night....belting out Touch Me is one of my fondest stage memories.

that and the audience reaction when i flung my bra off at the end of the song! lol

NICE! I wish my school was cool enough to do RHPS.

Colleges can. My sister was in it this year (Janet as well, playing it very SusanSarandon-y [the girl cannot belt to save her life]).
Salome

ugh..i cant listen to sarandon sing. she ruins the role.

I love her politics and her dramatic roles but please..she massacred the score.
RainbowJude

Sarandon

I wouldn't say that she massacred the score. True, I would have liked a greater vocal development between the earlier songs and "Touch Me" (which, notwithstanding, communicates a wonderful sense of freedom) but I don't think that her performance is awful by any means.

her acting was fine..no probnlems there.but she did indeed massacre the score. just compare her to Alice Ripley's dynamite performance.
no o\contest there.

But the performances in the revival were all pitched incredibly differently to those in the film and to those in the original production. The arrangements for the revival place so much conscious emphasis on the actual singing of the the songs - an emphasis that, in my opinion, was never really placed on the material before and that certainly wasn't a focal point of the performances in the film. The revival sounds like it was cast with singers; the film sounds like it was cast with actors who could sing. Sarandon could never turn in a performance like Ripley's, but I think Ripley's performance would be highly inappropriate in that film. So the comparison is really moot.

you are quite wrong about the revival being cast with mere singers..the acting was a major strength in the revival.
Ripley,Emmick, and Rubin Vega out acted their screen counterparts as well.

Hewitt was on par with Curry and Cavett was as good though different than Charles Gray's narrator.
RainbowJude

Wasn't saying that...

Be that as it may, I wasn't commenting on their acting at all. I was just pointing out how much more "sung" the singing was.

Check out, if you will, the 1974 Roxy cast album. It's a favourite amonst Rocky fans and their Touch-A by Abigail Haness was far better than Susan Sarandon.
RainbowJude

Oh, Janet...

My point was that I didn't feel that Sarandon massacred the score; I didn't imply that she offered the best ever performance of the material. Anyway, as far as the older Janets go (and I guess as Janets in general go), I still have a soft spot for Belinda Sinclair, who I personally prefer to Haness, Sarandon, Ripley and Kim Criswell (on the really awful studio recording from TER/JAY).

Ouuuuuch.
theatre4life

Well, to me, when Abigail sings the song, she sounds like she REALLY wants to be DIRRTY.

I will ALWAYS have a spot in my heart for Belinda Sinclair, as well. I've always wanted to know what Julie Covington sounded like. She was Janet FIRST, before Belinda and the rest.
Salome

Alice Ripley is the only Janet that truley sounds really down and dirty in that song. she is sex and pent up frustrations personified as janet. wow.

Exactly. I had the original movie soundtrack, and loved it. Then i got the Broadway revival. I haven't been able to listen to the original since... it seems so slow and boring.

On first listen, I didn't care for it. Daphne weirded me out a little. Then it grew on me.

I think it was Raul's beginning part in "Time Warp" that did it for me. Then afterwards, I played "Science Fiction..." about 10 times in a row because I absolutely loved Daphne's raw voice. Plus it's a nice CD to workout to.

I've only played a Phantom so far, but still want to play Eddie/Dr. Scott and of course Frank.

I wasn't actually aware that it was a legal show to do now. Am I living in a hole or what! Still, I'd love to play Janet. A group of friends (from Godspell) and I are dressing as the Rocky Horror Show for Hallowe'en next....erm....this year. I'm Janet! It'll be fun!

the show has been available to perform for decades. the rights were released in the mid 1980s. Sam French handles them.

Ah, thanks for the clarification!

This is one of my favorite shows, I would love to play Magenta or Janet (mostly Magenta...)

I have only seen the film but own: the film soundtrack, karaoke, audience parti-cip-ation album, the 1974 Roxy Cast, the 1973 London Cast, and the 2000 Broadway Revival. Good stuff.

I need to do this show. Soon.

what_the_heck013

I would love to see it live and do all of the interaction things. My friend has the DVD with all of the prompts for the audience participation so we will watch the movie whilst throwing rice, shooting waterguns, etc at the TV screen. Mucho fun.
One Song Glory

I have it on DVD, but I haven't tried out the AP thing yet. I'm going to have a Rocky night sometime this semester.

My mom was looking at my friend's college and one of their past productions was The Rocky Horror Show. I wish my college would do that - maybe I should suggest it. Idea Very Happy
purplepolkadot

Yeah, ive watchd a couple of those DVD things. I think that the one where a pair of lips shows in the bottom of the screen, then you click entre, and it goes to a performace of some theater, with people putting on the show, lip syncing to the movie, and doing the motions in front of it. With everyone in the audience all dressed up. It's pretty funny

I have to see this!!

Show

Yeap, I have seen the movie many times, I have it on DVD now. But, I have also seen the stage show here in NZ. RHS has been playing all over the place in NZ for yonks now. Last year I saw it at The Court Theatre, which is a local theatre company, producing proffessional productions. It is a small intimate thetre, but that doesn't stop them. Anyway, I reckon they did it better than the movie. I really enjoyed it.
