The Pope is coming, the Pope is coming!

The Pope is coming to Washington DC, in case you've been living in your closet for the last month. Unless you're outside the USA. I don't know what the media coverage has been like overseas.

Anyway, he's giving a lecture on my campus. There are "Rock the Pope!" signs plastered on the walls, and Rosary hours, and poster making parties, and video cameras everywhere....it's exciting. He'll be here thursday. We have no class tomorrow or thursday.

But yeah, I have a ticket to the lawn where we can see him coming. If there's any interest I'll take some pre-Pope pictures of what campus looks like. It's funny to see porta potties on the law school lawn and news trucks outside the dining hall.
Salome

Seig Heil Pope Ratzinger!
jazzygirlsings

I'm gonna say it...I don't like the current pope...

This morning I was really annoyed when a news segment was devoted solely to the two ambulances that will be escorting the pope through NYC...

Geez...it's not like we might actually need those for people who are in need of EMERGENCY assistance... Rolling Eyes

I can't wait for the REAL news to return!
kozafluitmusique

I'm so sorry for all those who I know are going to hate me for saying this,
I'm excited, too...I just finished watching some coverage on EWTN online! (So yes, it does carry overseas for me at least!).

Kakoforever, I remember when I visited, I saw some of the pre-Pope excitement. I'd love to see pictures...but if you're going to put them on fbook as well, I can see them there, if I'm the only one who's excited on here (but I'm sure there are a few others...).

I wish I was in Washington, D.C. now.
jazzygirlsings

I will admit...the idea of the "Pope-mobile" makes me laugh!

Look out, Batman!

I think the Pope-mobile and the Batmobile should drag race... Laughing

I love EWTN. Mother Angelica is so sweet, and Father Corapi is badass.

The pope looks at Batman, determination on his face...

Batman glares at the pope...

IT'S ON!!!!!!!!

I'm wondering if the entourage will go by the 495 beltway at Bethesda MD.

If so, just after you go around a turn the Mormon temple appears suddenly right in front of you, looking for all the world like The Emerald City in Oz (it's rather intimidating).

Often, right at the spot where the Mormon temple suddenly appears, there is graffitti on a bridge over 495 saying SURRENDER DOROTHY.

Me too! Kakoforever, it's so wonderful that you get to see the pope. I'm sad that I'll miss him.

Amber

Pope Benedict XVI is a frightening, frightening man.

I'm not going for the "attacking the Church" angle, either.

The man seriously frightens me.

It looks like he has evil behind his eyes, and whenever I see him I shiver.

Shocked
kakoforever

I'm not surprised with the complaints. This board is normally pretty religiously polarized. I can't give my own opinion of this Pope, I just don't feel qualified. I mean, he hasn't done anything to make me like or dislike him yet. who knows.

But yeah. Right now I'm focusing on the fact that since we're sort of on lock down (I can't get to the practice rooms for the next couple days, or the dance studios), and since the dining hall is closed, and the metro, I have no food....

I'll hop over to the Capitol Building and let them know that judging people based on their appearance is now okay.
Trevor reincarnate

It's not about his appearance. Last time I checked, he looks like any other old fart.

It's about what's in his eyes. The eyes are the passage to the soul and his eyes are quite evil looking.

Dear Beagle... stop being so defensive about EVERYTHING. The job of being an MdN mod is to keep the peace... and you seem to be involved in ALL the drama. Think about it. Thanks.

Stop misquoting me. It's not his eyes, but what's behind his eyes. In his soul. Silly boy.
Quique

Where is Sinead O'Connor when you need her?
mastachen

I agree with Amber, Heather, and Trevor about the eyes.
Salome

He was a member of the Hitler Youth don't forget.
Mistress

I think he was part of the HY only because he had to be...God only knows what happened to people who refused to join...

And as for the pope looking creepy, there's a reason why he was nicknamed "God's rotweiller"...although I think that was more for his policies and admin, but it works for his appearance just as well.

I'm glad people can't change in your books.

I wish the new Pope wasn't so scary. John Paul was kind of adorable.

Wink

He's coming by any minute and it's an absolute circus outside, somewhat similar to what it's like at inauguration time. Suppporters, detractors, and just people who want to bring their kids for a historic occasion.
Salome

JPII was recruited for the Hitler Youth..he fought instead. joined the priesthood became a ski instructor, actor, and outspoken advocate against the nazi atrocities.

I don't think it's fair to compare him to his predecessor. JPII was a legend, and a very tough act to follow. There are things concerning Benedict XVI that make it easy to take cheap shots, yes...but even without those things, no one can fill JPII's shoes.

But JPII could never work Benedict XVI's Prada shoes.
Monsieur D'Arque

I'm cutting him a little slack since it's a new job for him, but whereas the last Pope went out and did things to do God's will or just the greater good of humanity, Benedict seems so far to just like sitting back in the PopeThrone and condemning things from afar, especially things that John Paul II went out of his way to say he supported (i.e. Harry Potter).

Rolling Eyes Way to take what I said and totally misuse it. I am not judging him as a Pope. It's not his fault his eyes are so deeply set. I'm not saying, "Oh, he's a bad man! His eyes are scary!" I don't know the man personally or what he's like. I simply made an observation. It could be that despite the scary evil looking eyes, he's all fuzzy ducklings and rainbows. I don't know. Just an OBSERVATION I made. I'm sure you've been frightened by something you've just had a glimpse of without knowing it fully. Go back to the Capitol. Tell them that you're free to turn people's words around, misconstrue them, and make others look stupid.

To everyone else: I apologize. I just will not stand for being misunderstood.
Matthew

Maybe you should've said he's a frightening LOOKING man (since you found it entirely appropriate to comment on his appearance rather than his work.)
Trevor reincarnate

Matthew... do you even LIKE the pope...? lol
Cake_in_Song

I'm pretty sure he tried to ban Harry Potter. Not cool.
Matthew

Based on the things he's done for the church from an outside standpoint, I have no reason to dislike him.

He gets bonus points in my book for banning those pathetic pieces of "literature", too.

Next is somebody else's video of the pope's departure. I was right next to this person. Literally. It was pretty intense. Pope Benedict seemed nice enough. It looked like he asked one of his aides if he could go shake our hands or something, because then the aide shook his head no and the pope kind of shrugged. But he was cool. I'm glad I went.

Oh, and here's our choir rehearsing. They sounded INCREDIBLE over the air during the Pope's entrance and exit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iI1ilMRzxl8

When I was in third grade my teacher said she was a princess and that was her castle. And yes, it is pretty damn intimidating. Especially at night when you're sleepy and its all dramatically lit up.

Anywho, it's pope madness here. I know tons of people who went to the mass.

Just because it's crappy writing doesn't mean it should be banned.
