The Pirates of PenzanceAlright so today we found out we are doing this play at my high school in November! I don't know much about it we watched it tonight! And it looks fun but challenging at least for a school of my size!! And well I really want a lead but there are only 2 leads for girls! And I am a senior im a soprano or mezzo-soprano i can do both! I was Mrs POtts last year...and Ruth is very much like her at times! But I would rather be Mabel! Does anyone have any advice for me?!! I would love any information or advice!! Thanks!

Mabel hangs pretty high and is really suited to a very high and agile soprano (technically a coloratura soprano) if I remember correctly, she has a high Eb somewhere (optional sustained one at the end of "Poor Wandring One" but thats optional as in everyone expects you to sing it)
if you have the voice for Mabel then go for that....everyone prefers a Mabel who can sing better than a Mabel who can act and make it through the arias
Ruth is also a great part and more for an actress who sings
Isabell and Kate (and theres one more isnt there?) are cute supporting roles as well

Edith is the other sister. She's got the largest role of the daughters, other than Mabel. It's a soprano role, but the soprano who plays her should be comfortable in mezzo range as well, because her solos have a large range.
Can you tell I played the part before? 
I've also played Mabel, and I can tell you, that's some pretty difficult singing. If you are a mezzo, I'd strongly suggest going for Ruth. She's more fun to play acting-wise anyway!

Thank you everyone for your advice!!! I tried out on Wednesday and today I found out the results! I will be playing RUTH! I am SOOOOO excited!!! I can't wait to start practicing!! Thanks again for everything!!

You are going to have a blast playing Ruth; she's such a fun part.
I'm hoping to be able to play her in community theatre productions myself in about 10-15 years!

i played mabel and let me just say it's a pretty awesome role. i also received the role as a young teen. have fun being Ruth.... embrace it. Ruth has some of the greatest songs i tihnk. "Paradox" is my absolute favorite. Mabel does have the best vocal range but Ruth is the one you'll remember... no doubt!
