The newbie needs help!

Ok, well, I'm new on here, and I'm auditioning for my high school's production of Grease in August. I know it's kind of far off, but I thought it would be good to get some advice before I go in there and maybe practice a bit too. So, I don't really know what they want, since I have never done a school play or really any musical thatre before, but I've been singing for my entire life, and I've heard I'm pretty good. I don't mean to toot my own horn, but too toot! So, if anybody has any audition tips or any ideas about what song I should sing to audition for the role of Sandy...PLEASE let me know! I would really love to get this part, but as I will only be a sophomore, it will be a challenge to get the lead over seniors, so I'll have to be really really good. So, if anybody can help, PLEASE do! Thanks! Smile

What is your range? And don't worry about 'tooting your own horn'; if you know you have talent, why deny it?! Very Happy

Well, thank you! And I can sing basically anything from low alto to fairly high soprano. I sing alto in choir, but only because we are in serious need of altos. I could sing soprano or mezzo if needed. I don't know EXACTLY what my range is but I'm pretty sure it's a low F below middle C to a high Eflat above middle C. I'm pretty sure. And that's what I'm comfortable singing, not what I can get to. I can get a lot higher, but after about an E flat, it doesn't sound very good. and anything below a low F or so sounds horrible as well. So, if you have any advice or ideas, I'd love the feedback! Well you're going for Sandy, right?

Hmm, I don't know which side of her would be best to show; the sweet innocent side would be easier to pick a song for I reckon, but the the kickass side would be more fun ^_^

You need to pick a song you can act, obviously; and potentially something quite contemporary?
littlesallybrown

yes what are you trying to show off in the audition?

Well, I'd be really good at showing the sweet, innocent side, but, like they said above^ The other side would be alot of fun. So, I don't really know. I mean, I'm basically like the sweet, innocent type anyway, so... Smile

hey girl I think my range is similiar to yours. I can't think of a song for you at the moment though. But that's cool that we have the same kind of range and all Smile I'm trying to get to a F and G up in there right now. Anyhoo good luck at the auditions in august! Smile
CYTthespian

well, good luck in the audition.

and don't think i'm saying this because i don't think you can get the part, but don't get your hopes up too high for the role of sandy...i mean, you just started, and getting leads takes tons and tons of work and experience in theatre.

just consider that. but i do hope you get a fantastic part - even sandy, if you truly want it and deserve it - and have a blast, and find the magic of the stage.

as for an audition song, i think you should sing something that shows off the sweet side of sandy, because she doesn't turn badass until the very, very end.

just be sure and pick a song that really shows off your range/belting ability.

Thanks for the advice so far! I think CYTthespian is right. I know that I shouldn't get my hopes up, and I probably won't get the role of Sandy, but I'm still going to give it all I've got! I know that whatever happens, I want to be in the show more than just about anyting. Grease is one of my all time favorites! So, no matter what happens, I'm going to give it all I've got, and hope for the best! But still, more advice never hurts! Wink

good for you - go out there and own that stage. and who knows? you could end up stealing the show, no matter what role you get. Very Happy

Well, I don't mean to bring up a dead thread...

But I just wanted to say thanks for all the advice! It paid off, as I found out yesterday that I will be playing Jan in Grease! We had a four day audition, including singing a prepared bit of We Go Together, dancing to the same song, and reading various parts. It was a blast! I loved the audition and I know I'm going to love performing! So thanks for all the help! Wish me luck!
