The musical and the original book

I must admit I have never been a true fan of Oliver!, but I do know some of the songs from the musical and I've seen the film. I've also seen the stage version twice. However, I think I like the book much more.
I've felt that even though the musical is loosely based on the book, I think that the first act focuses too heavily on Oliver falling into Fagin's clutches. At the same time I feel unhappy that the second act appears rushed. The musical seems to gloss over all the complications of the relationships in Act Two, and it omits the character of Monks completely.
I'm terribly sorry if I have ruffled anyone's feathers, but while many of the songs are good I've never thought much about the book to stage adaptation that Lionel Bart employed.

I'm glad you share my views. While these songs are undeniably catchy, I would always turn to the book if I would like to experience the story. I think it's richer and has so much texture that I cannot find in the musical adaptation.

Both points I was going to make, thank you.

Love the book, love the show. Book's better however. It's Dickens, he's a genious. And honestly, the things that are covered in the second act don't excite me much in the book, as much as those in the first.
