It's been a show for a very long time now.
The "feeling of greatness" happened about forty years ago. You just missed it.

The film really isnt good at all, in my opinion it is one of the worst ever musical films.
The stage musical has some beautiful songs in it and some great dance numbers. Fiona was my 1st principle role with my theatre group so it has special memories for me. All in all though it isnt a great show.

maybe you should have, like, know it was movie, and not have expected us to tell you.

^^ Exactly. It was a movie of a stage musical that was made, like, 50 years ago. Wouldn't you have thought that it was already a stage show by now?

The film version isnt perfect but it has some wonderful things in it. namely Van Johnson's perfect portrayal of Jeff. no one has come close in the role. the way he delivers the cynical lines such as "If theres anything i hate....its YOu." or "Ita not the heat its the humanity". after preiceless.
Gene Kelly's "Almost Like Being in Love' dance and the lovely Virginia Bolsler as Jeannie.

Welcome to the Brigadoon forum, xoFoRgEtReGrEtox!! I'm sorry we've made such a poor first impression. We're really not mean; we just have a strange way of teasing each other.
We're really very glad that you like Brigadoon. It's a wonderful movie, though, as Salome and others have mentioned, it's not a patch on the stage show. Many musicals of the 40's and 50's were filmed for the movies; the opening credits will state something like: Based on the Stage Production by <whoever it is> and choreographed by <whoever it is>.
Now, how about telling us some of the things you like best about the movie? Shall I start? Aside from Gene Kelly's dancing, which is always superb, there's a line near the end that's delivered when the guys are in a crowded bar; I think it's Van Johnson who says it. Anyway, whenever my son and I are in an uncomfortably loud, crowded, over-stuffy place, we'll agree about our discomfort that 'It's not the heat - it's the humanity!'
Anyway, there you are. I look forwarded to hearing from you.

I like the film version a lot, Kelly's really good in it. It's just a pity that they cut out some songs from it. Have there been any revivals of the stage production?

Meg Bussert and Martin Vidnovic starred in a Broadway revival in 1980.
Robert Meadmore did the london revival in 1988.

Are there any soundtracks for those?

there is a cast recording of the London revival.

When I was in Brigadoon, we had a Jeff that embodied everything Jeff is. He did a great job. This, however, was namely because he was just like Jeff in real life. It was almost like he was playing himself and recieting lines written by Lerner. He even said near the end that jeff was hard to play because they where so much alike...which probably wasn't the best thing in the world...
