The Likes of Us?

Ho do guys and gals, I'm new here but I thought I'd hop straight into the discussion side of things.

I'm currently involved with a production of The Likes of Us and was wondering what the general consensus was? Now I am hardly the biggest ALW fan but even by his standards the material does seem to be lacking in creativity.

Anyone know this show?

It should be considered nothing more than juvenalia, IMO. It was Lloyd Webber & Rice's first show and the good bits were stolen for use in other shows.

I can only judge by the concert recording (which unfortunately doesn't have the song tracks separated from the narration). I think it's a very charming and promising score. It does have huge problems and won't probably really work on stage, but is melodical and cute. I like it a lot, when it's taken for what it is.

I think it's far more creative and fascinating thamn much of what ALW wrote after Aspects of Love, at least.

I've never heard of it.

What sot of music is it?

It's the first show ALW and Tim Rice wrote together. It's rather remeniscent ogf Oliver! and that type of shows. The title tune appeared in Song And Dance, and a presentation song sounds like it's I'm Gonna Like It Here (or whatever it's called from TWIW).

The music is very old fashioned, 60s sort of show tunes. Very melodic and nice, but not very sensational. I like it.

I must say....

It is gratifying to know that its not just me who doesn't like it. To be fair I have only had one rehearsal so I am hoping once we get the show on its feet it will come into its own as it were but the score seems to be lacking in any kind of melody with alot of the songs having about five notes in them. I could be rather harsh and say that you can tell its an early Webber because he hasn't learned to plagarise yet:p Although one number is a dead ringer for "When the Saints Go Marching In"
music is my life!!!

omg i was waiting for someone to bring this up! I've listened to the concert recording and have to say that i think it's quite good, esp for ALW/TR's first show together. I'm doing it in my youththeatre in 2010 and hope for the part of Syrie or Rose! lol
some of the songs seem a bit repetitive but i especially love the whole "going going gone" scene.... so funny! I can imagine my theatre group doing that song Laughing Laughing is it just me or does the first song with the kids on the rooftops give you chills?

nah, it's probably just me Smile
Wandering Ranger

oh that "Likes of Us" song? I actually find that pretty anoying after a while lol. Having said that we haven't got the kids yet so I imagne it will have the "aww" factor once they do it. I think its probably going to be better once its up on its feet but the music doesn't thrill me too much. Having said that "Going Going Gone" seems to be very amusing.
music is my life!!!

have you listened to the concert recording? i think that auctioneer is someone we all should know.... lol
Wandering Ranger

ah a friend did lend it to me but I only listened to it once. Who is it?
music is my life!!!

apparently it's.... *drum roll* .... tim rice Laughing

I'm currently directing the show. It is a beautiful piece and fortuitously allows you as much creativity as you want. Stick with rehearsals, like any new show, it takes a while to get used to it. My cast are loving it.
Wandering Ranger

ooh where ae you directing it jessie? I do take your point though about sticking with it. I suppose it'd be easier if we werent doing Beauty and the Beast starting in September and I wasn't looking forward to that so much!
Angel-of-Music*

I'm in rehearsals for it at the minute too, personally i dont like it too much.
Twice in love every day is a good song, and going going gone and have another cup of tea are good fun. But quite a lot of them are repetitive and irritating, especially syries songs, which all seem to be sickeningly sweet.
I quite like love is here, despite its repetetive irritating-ness, it sticks in my head for days.

Has anyone noticed that the song "We'll Get Him" is the Ismalites theme from "Poor Poor Joseph".
MyTrueLove

I like it, I heard it only one time, but I like it.
Itīs nice.
