The Light in the Piazza

So what does anything think of this musical?
Salome

although technically well composed and written it was dull...dull..dull... *yawn* did i mention dull?
Yakko

Yes....
Disney-Bway27

Exactly what Dawn said. It's a ridiculously well written show, and Adam Guettel is a genius, but the show as a whole is a bore.
Yakko

Wait how can a well written show be boring may I pray tell?
dolbinau

I like listening to the cast recording, but I'm not a big fan of the story. I didn't find the PBS broadcast 'boring' but it will be a while before I see it again - I think if I saw it live it would also be much more interesting. I stupidly missed a professional Sydney concert of this!

Do you know when they'll air it again?

It's like...I can acknowledge it's genius and how well-written it is, because to be honest, technically, it's a VERY well-written show. But just the way it was executed and some of the orchestrations combine to make it rather dull. I enjoy listening to some songs but you couldn't pay me to sit through the entire cast recording in one sitting.

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA

I guess there's no accounting for taste.

Personally, I find it extremely moving and not boring in the least. A lot of other people do too. It is easily one of the best shows of the past decade. When we did the poll here on the Top 10 Musicals since 2000, it placed 2nd overall and on the other musicals forum on which I post, it placed 1st.

Yeah, it really is a good show, and I do like the plot a lot. And the score is a work of genius, but there's just something about it that doesn't grip my attention at all. It is easily one of the best of the decade, but I can think of others from the past decade that I'd rank higher.

I completely agree. The music is so beautiful, and I don't find it boring at all. Like David said, it's extremely moving. I love the story, and especially the setting. But I guess, different strokes for different folks.
Disney-Bway27

Don't get me wrong, I do like it. Smile It might just be the cast recording, though. The way the recording was made just doesn't grip me. I don't know...I do enjoy it, and I'm sure if I saw it live I'd feel differently, but...I dunno. Just something about the way it's presented and executed strikes me as uninteresting.
LeocadiaBegbick

One of the most gorgeous, moving shows to come out in the 2000s.

No, I downloaded it..(If you know how to use torrents you can find it at a torrent site).

Really? I love them, the overture is really great IMO! Have you seen the PBS Broadcast?

I find it very difficult to enjoy many cast recordings if they haven't been put into context..
kozafluitmusique

This show is easily one of my favorite shows.

I want to play Margaret so badly.

I personally think it is a brilliant piece and is pretty sophisticated. Guettel's pedigree as Richard Rodgers' grandson shows. It was scheduled for a limited engagement at Lincoln Center and was extended at least twice I know of and did a tour (saw it twice).

I loved the music, story and staging. It does have a slower pacing than your typical Broadway show and it doesn't use glitz and glamor. Probably the most romantic story ever written (yes I know, very strong claim). I confess it is probably too tough for guys to watch because it is romance in overdrive. I found it to be so emotionally intense that I felt really drained and spent afterward, a real cathartic experience. I couldn't emotionally handle a real life experience like that. Shocked

It deserved better commercial success and that PBS Live from Lincoln Center broadcast should be released as a DVD.

The music was just so gorgeous. There was nothing to hum along to and I think that's why a lot of people didn't like it. I think the show made Kelly Ohara a star- I was fortunate enough to see her right before she left the show. I didn't hear a lot of good things about the girl who replaced her.
dolbinau

Are you saying that some people claim that there is 'nothing to hum along to' or are you claiming there is 'noting to hum along to'?

Anything with a melody should be 'hummable' Razz, I don't understand this criticism.
Disney-Bway27

^ I never understood it either. I saw someone say you can't hum to Sondheim. From my earliest experiences with Sondheim, I could hum till the cows came home.
dolbinau

He was asked this once and responded that it comes with repetition, using the analogy that people hum "A weekend in a country".

And I think I agree. Listen to something from Passion 100 times and you've probably heard it about the same amount of time as once of the Phantom melodies, I'm sure you can hum it then Razz.
Pounce

Perhaps by "hummable" people mean they like the tune and it is easily remembered.

So yes, I don't think the average person can walk out of the theater after seeing TLITP and hum the tunes. I believe Guettel's score is considered to be a complex piece (as is I suppose Sondheim's).
kozafluitmusique

Did anyone see the high school production clips of it? What did you think?
Disney-Bway27

To be honest, though, as far as Guettel's shows go, I prefer Floyd Collins over Piazza. FYI.
DontDoSadnessxx

I'll be honest, I saw this show with my italian class and the only thing that kept me awake was the fact that Aaron Lazar was shirtless at the end of Act 2. However, when it was on PBS and I bought the cast recording, the more I listened to it the more I appreciated it.

It's the type of show that needs to be searched beyond the surface. Not particularly something that will pull you in. It's a flaw but in a way I admire the time I had to put in to fully understand it.

Floyd Collins is his only show I like.
