The Last Unicorn...

The 25th Anniversary DVD is out tomorrow and when I found out, I was ecstatic! http://www.conlanpress.com/

It totally brings back my childhood! I watched it so much that my Dad would stick his head into the room as my sis and I were watching and yell, "THE LAST!!!!!!!! I KNEW YOU WERE THE LAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

So please tell me y'all know what this is and share your love/hate of this movie! LOL! Laughing
Salome

wasnt Christopher Lee and Angela Lansbury in that? I remember it!
jazzygirlsings

^Yep! And Mia Farrow...it actually had a pretty stellar cast! LOL!
shakalakababy

oh man that's exciting! I loved the last unicorn, i haven't seen it for god knows how many years. I have some of the songs though Smile
Lazarus (Adam G)

I forgot about that little 80's gem. I loves it.
MsDivaKate

I will totally buy that DVD! I LOVED the Last Unicorn. Oh how amazing the 80's were.
MaryMag

I am so stoked others share my love of this movie!

It was the first movie MaryMag ever cried at. Imagine 5 year old little MaryMag sitting 6 inches away from the television, sniffling at the end credits as the unicorn somberly returns to her forest, whispering to herself, "she'll never be the same..."
jazzygirlsings

Even though I knew how it ended (because my sis and I watched it religiously everyday...) we still ended up crying and running to Daddy for a hug! LOL!

well if you dont count Ronald Reagan,Contra-gate,Inflation, Bush Jr.,The Me Generation,Greed and Oil strikes...you could call the 80s amazing. Rolling Eyes

Ya gotta admit...they had some AWESOME hair.
Robinflamingo

Here's where I have to do research. In 1980, I turned 24, and I never, ever saw this movie. I got married in '82, and my memory of that year is more my wedding, getting used to being married, Officer and a Gentleman, and Victor/Victoria.

Yes, I'm apparently old.

jazzygirlsings

Robinflamingo, you gotta see this movie! Smile
kakoforever

ahhhhh! Me too!

Here's one for ya: My dance studio organized its competition groups by age. When I was a Mini (the 5-6 year olds), the Juniors (the 11-12 year olds) were AMAZING. They had all these little stars, and they did this unbelievably gorgeous routine to "The Last Unicorn". I wish I could put it up here, its on VHS.

During the "I'm alive" part, all 20 of them would do 7 slow fouettes in unison. It was awesome.

Then I found the movie and obsessed over it. I love Kenny Loggins version of the theme song.
jazzygirlsings

^LOL! AW! That must have been so cute!

When I saw that this movie was coming out tomorrow in EW, my bf was like, "What the heck is that movie?"...So tomorrow...he will know! Smile

One thing I love about the movie is that it's actually pretty dark! It's not like "The Dark Crystal" (Another classic!) scary, but it's pretty freaky!
opheliarose

I *adore* the Dark Crystal (but then, I'm a Jim Henson freak)

I don't remember the Last Unicorn that well, (but I'll totally be putting it on my list), but the 80's had some of the best fantasy movies EVER:

Willow
Legend (b/4 Tom Cruise was quite so creepy)
The Neverending Story
The Princess Bride (totally chose my wedding dress based on this movie!)
Labyrinth (I admit it, I like anything Jim Henson except the crap that was released after his death when owned by Disney)
The Storyteller (okay, this was a miniseries, but still AMAZING)
Ladyhawke
The Secret of NIMH
others I'm too tired to think of right now

The 80's were a pretty fantastic time to be a kid, at least pop-culture wise! I wasn't really aware of all the Iran-Contra stuff and the like.

But the 70s were even better.

I'm rather fond of the Leave It To Beaver land of the late 50's and early sixties I grew up with...where pop culture all began.
Salome

the 70s were the best!Star Wars,Planet of the Apes, Dallas,The Dukes of Hazard,Falcon Crest..Po Culture at its finest!
djcobra

I loved that movie when I was a kid...but I haven't seen it in forever.

"The lift of longing / The crash of loss / The bitterness of... cross? boss? moss? Damn!"

Although, I have to admit, I was more of a Secret of Nimh fan.

Also Sondheim at his prime. No great shows poping out every two seconds from other great authors...ahh...wish I could've seen it.

OMG! Another classic gem! Smile

And I loved that a cartoon swore...I think that's the first time I had ever heard someone swear as a cartoon...Oh, The Last Unicorn! You give me so many fond memories! LOL!
Salome

the 70s were indeed Sondheim's most prolific period..

Company, Follies,Pacific Overtues,Sweeney Todd, and Merrily We Roll Along. not to mention revivals of Gypsy and Forum.

Back to the awesomeness of the Last Unicorn!

I love that America did the music. I totally have the soundtrack. And on rare occasions, when I and my company are drunk enough, I force people to listen to it. The worst is when I play, "Now that I'm a Woman." Laughing Laughing
Salome

You are drunk alot lately, chickie poo. Wink

I am. And it's a nice change! Blame it on my new cast.
ConverseSneaker

Shocked I was just thinking about this movie today. The only reason it wasn't my #1 favorite when I was little was because of Beauty and the Beast. And the fact I didn't actually own a copy, I just borrowed it from the library a few times and loved it.

Actually, I think I'll borrow it again. For a children's movie, it was really good. And I like the book better than another one of Peter Beagle's, Imortal Unicorn.
kakoforever

I was a fan of the song "Man's Road" too...so sad and so pretty

Oh yes Star Wars, brilliant films (the first two anyway). Planet of the Apes, awesome first film and spectacularly bad as they progressed. I'm expecting to receive disc 4 of the TV series today from my DVD rental people Laughing

Dallas. I'd have said more an 80's phenomenon, same with Dynasty as they were rivals. Was it not 1981 the whole 'Who Shot JR? Admittedly Dallas started in 1978.

OK, I'm gonna start some threads. We shouldn't hijack.
jazzygirlsings

So I bought the DVD yesterday and watched it through with FH! LOL! Smile

And THEY CUT OUT THE SWEAR WORDS!!!!!!!!!!! I was pissed! I think they especially added something to the line: "The lift of longing / The crash of loss / The bitterness of... cross? boss? moss? Damn!"

I remember The Last Unicorn being the first time I came in contact with swear words in a cartoon...Though honestly, they were no worse than "hell" or "damn"...but UGH!

And the lyrics kinda made FH and I crack up! It was like that song from South Park during the anime episode where they sing "Let's Fighting LOOOVE!!!!!!!!!"

Otherwise, it was a wonderful story and we both enjoyed it immensely! Smile
Salome

its been so long since ive seen it. Does Christopher Lee have a song? I remember Angie singing.
jazzygirlsings

Angie doesn't sing, she casts spells...

And Christopher Lee just plays King Haggard...he doesn't have a song, but he has the BEST line...

"THE LAST!!!! I KNEW YOU WERE THE LAST!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Indeed we are far from that. However, since you all are such wonderful girls, I'm sure you won't be offended if I don't have the banner up, for whatever strange reason I have.
