The House of Blue Leaves

What do you know about this show? My school is doing it next year and I want to know more about it. I did read the script, so I'm more looking for your opinion on the show or experiences.
Amber

I'd suggest you send a PM to LaurelDP (she might have shortened her name to just Laurel, I don't know). She did a production of the show a year or so ago.
Salome

I'm not a jOhn Guare fan at all.

Blue Leaves tries to be a comedy but in the end it comes off as cruel.

I played Second Nun and really enjoyed the experience. Feel free to ask me anything about the show!

I played Artie in HS (Oh, God, was it really 25 years ago?!?!) The man's life is falling apart; his wife is insane, his girlfriend is a floozy, his former best friend has made it big, his son is AWOL, and his music career is going nowhere, and in the end he snaps. Are there any specific questions you have?

Yes there are elements of comedy in it, but in the end I see Artie as a tragic figure, and the ending is very sad.
LittleRedLovesTheater

okay, so. I was in this show last year.

I played the Middle/Second Nun as well. I had sooo much fun! I must admit, I found the script really boring but it's still a good show.

The nuns have the most fun, to me, but also Banannas is a great character.

I also agree that the ending is quite tragic & rather spooky.

We did this show in the round, black box style, which was kinda scary b/c the audience was so close.

I forget which nun I was in college 35 years ago. It was the one with the line about the binoculars, and had a great time, esp. after I discovered how to make my glasses fall back in place without touching them. I even had to teach the Shriners the Eddie Cantor song 'Margie'. Our 'Artie' was a marine biology teacher, one of the Shriners was was his second-oldest son in real life, Bananas was an 18-year-old student; it was wild!

I love that show. *waves around her copy of the script*

I wish we were doing it!

Sorry I can't offer more, but best of luck!

well, I guess the main question is this. Is it worth skipping the musical (Brigadoon) to audtion for this?
Salome

Bigadoon is by far the better show. question is whats your type?
Theaterfan101

well I'm not that talent in singing/dancing area but so few people at my school are wanting to audition for Brigadoon and it has such a big cast I think I have a better chance of getting in. Plus I want to assistant direct a show and House of Blue Leaves may be a good chance to do that. My type is basically what ever I can get because I just love being in the theater.

But I was also asking to advise my too best friends that have been in conflict between these two for two months now. They both are amazing singer/dancer/actors. One of them turned down auditioning for Madrigals because their members aren't allowed to be in House, and she may want to audition for that. They both were in the musical last year as freshmen and one of them (again a freshman) played the lead role.

We also are all extremely excited for this play because it is our directors favorite play of all time and we idolize him so much. So should I (and my friends?) go to the musical which we aren't as excited about but have a better chance of getting in, or do the winter play that is smaller, more competitive, but what excites us more. because if we skip the musical and don't get in to the spring play we won't be acting in anything until either Late Febuary or early march, and either way we will only be doing one play, not two.
