One Song Glory

The Full Monty

I was on call for this show for stage crew... and I thought it was a pretty decent musical (with the exception of stripping) and it had some nice songs.

It's basically about a bunch of unemployed husbands jealous over their wifes' infauation with male strippers... so they take it upon themselves to put together a male strip show starring themselves.

That's a crappy synopsis, I know... Laughing I was wondering if anyone here has seen it or worked crew for it?

I've never seen The Full Monty, but I think the show has a wonderful book and score. In a year where the Tony awards went crazy about The Producers, this show was unfortunately pushed to the sidelines. In my opinion, The Full Monty has a score that completely outstrips The Producers in every way, except in the category of blatantly obvious humour.

It's not that I don't like The Producers - in fact, I think it's hysterical and a really great musical comedy. I just don't think that it topped The Full Monty as far as the score and (arguably) the book were concerned.

I've seen both The Full Monty and The Producers and I much preferred The Full Monty. Funny thing is both shows are based on movies. For me, neither show had much in the way of memorable songs but The Full Monty was a much more interesting show with a better story. The Producers would probably better fit in the time it was written and the movie made, the 1960s.

This site has a lot of information on it too.

Full Monty was Yazbeck, I think. It's kind of an unfortunate pattern for him. He's got truly hilarious shows (The Full Monty, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) that are outstripped by a show that is liked more because it's more blatantly obviously funny (Spamalot, The Producers).
Further analyzing: Think about "Love Is My Legs" in comparison to "The Song that Goes Like This". They're doing the exact same thing, riffing on the typical love duet and making it totally absurd, but "Legs" is ten times more subtle.

A little too subtle...from just listening to the cast recordings, it sounds like they acutally are "overact[ing] like hell" and "singing far too loud." Perhaps I have to see it to find it funny.

Yes, Full Monty is Yazbek.

I saw the tours of both "Monty" and "The Producers".
They are both great in their own ways but you really can't compare them.
"Monty" has comedy but it has a lot of heart.
"The Producers" one purpose is to make you laugh and it does a great job of that.

Question:
My college is doing this musical for SummerStage and I was wondering what the women's parts are like. Is there a part for a lyrical soprano who typically plays the ingenue?

The women in this show get down and dirty! No soprano roles (not leads anyway). There's Georgie and she is a mezzo belt and sings Womens World with the ensemble women. Vicki is an older married woman, a comedic role, not soprano either. And Jeanette is an alto, even older than Vicki.

I am in it right now and it is fabulous. The songs are very funny and the stripping is only a very small part of it, but helps top it off. The audiences are going crazy. This is our closing weekend too. If you EVER get a chance to see it, go! Cause its great. It's like a big party.

Thanks. Sounds like a fun show from what I've heard. My director told me there are 8 women with "a range of age and personality". Eh... who knows. I got a little bit of a belter in me. We'll see what happens. Thanks for the info though, and break a leg with your run!
