The Film

I saw the film yesterday and i really enjoyed it!! I was suprised because i usually get pretty bored by alot of the older musical films like oklahoma and south pacific. What does everyone else think of it? x
Salome

how cna older musicals bore you? they are 5 times better than most of the shit happeneing today.
Kaiana

I liked it too, but I didn't really like Marian's voice. It was too dark and vibrato for the role imo.
what_the_heck013

Which version did you see? The Robert Preston/Shirley Jones version or the Matthew Broderick/Kristin Chenoweth version?
Kaiana

Dear me, the first one. I don't think I want to see it with Cheno.

She's not so bad. On the DVD one of the bonus features is her singing one of the songs (Til There Was You?) at a concert of some sort and she sounds simply amazing.

There is a one with Cheno in it!!!?? I LOVE HER!!! I will have to find it.
I didnt say i didnt like the older films i just find them alot more interesting on stage. Some of the films are so dull. There are some that i love though, like hello dolly.

Well, I happen to love older musicals and I thought The Music Man was great! I expected it to be really boring but I actually really enjoyed it. Why is it that Shirley Jones is in every single old musical though? (Ok, not every one, but The Music Man, Carousel, and Oklahoma - as the LEADS!) I think she's got a beautiful voice and acts well but she's just a little over-done maybe. Anyway, you should watch Guys & Dolls or Bye, Bye, Birdie! Those old musicals are really good as well.

It's a great movie. Robert Preston IS Harold Hill...no one will ever top him, ever. He is simply amazing.

i actually could not sit through "the music man" film. reason why i had doubts about the show. but i realized how much more enjoyable the live performance of music man is than the film!
seymour_ii

Robert Preston makes that role look so easy. Seeing him do that part so many times makes it a dream role of mine.
Salome

You cant beat the original film..Preston,Jones,Paul Ford,Hermione Gingold, and Buddy Hackett are all perfection.

the t.v remake is dreadful not a single person is cast well.
Mimi Marquez

I completely agree with Salome. The new movie cast was awful. I'm probably going to be shot for this, but I really am not a huge fan of Kristin Chenowith's voice in this role. I think Shirley Jones is fantastic as Marion though.

Robert Preston was just brilliant. He created the role both onstage and in the movie, so he basically owns the part. I actually heard that the director of the movie wanted Frank Sinatra to play Harold Hill but Meredith Wilson told them "no Robert Preston, no movie."
Salome

I cant stomach chenoweth in anything..but Music Man was one of her worst roles.

actaully the studio didnt want Sinatra it was Cary Grant. lucky Willlson and Morton DaCosta won. Grant is wonderful but Preston is the Music Man
WalkingInStardust

I LOVE the older version. Nothing will ever top it. Robert Preston IS the Music Man. In the two versions I have been in our Harold's have done fabulous jobs, but no one will ever come close to getting Harold Hill as perfectly as Preston.
The only thing I liked about the new version is it was pretty. And when that's the best thing that can be said about a musical... it's not good.
Rentaford

I thought the original Robert Preston version rocked
EponineBarker

I haven't seen the original yet, but (y'all are probably not going to like this) I love the new version with Broderick/Chenoweth... (Please don't hurt me!)
BroadwayBeast

I love the movie. In 8th grade we had to do a project on one of our favorite ferformers in choir and i chose Robert Preston, and I sang "Gary Indiana". Like Allie said, Robert IS Harold Hill. Nice Call Allie.
Dancediva19

I got to see Music Man (the original version) in the theater (and it was one of those theaters that serves you dinner while you watch!) so it was absolutely spectacular! And to top that, Shirley Jones was there and gave a little speech and then answered some of the audience's questions. It was very cool.
ShadowInTheWings

Perhaps because I saw the new version first, I definitely prefer it to the old one. It's a trend of noticed in myself- whether it's a remake or a book-to-screen situation, I invaribly prefer whichever one I was exposed to first.

And I really like Matthew Broderick, so that helped, and I liked Cheno, though I didn't know who she was the first time I saw it.
Broadwaybaby2822

I haven't seen the new version yet, and I really don't want to lol. Cause I don't think it could EVER top the older version! I'm like obsessed with the movie now! lol I can't stop watching it!! Very Happy
Brigantine

It has always been my favorite old movie musical. Shirley Jones is my hero! Wink

Don't like the new disney one with Broderick and Cheno. Matthew Broderick is just NOT Harold Hill. In that movie, he looks like he has a neck injury or something- he never moves his head independently of his neck!!! Very stiff and a little too geeky for Harold.
Cheno was ...OK... of course she has an amazing vocal talent, but, a little bit too... I'm not sure... for Marian. What really bugged me about her in that movie was that her face and hair were the same color- a dark blonde and very tan. She looked really blah. It didn't look period. (not that every movie musical is incredibly period perfect) But she just looked strange. She was alright as the character though.
having Molly Shannon as Eulalie was pretty funny, though.
