I loved Madonna's performance. Her "Don't Cry" and "Lament" are standout scenes.
Antonio rocks in most of his scenes.
Jimmy Nail (Magaldi) nailed the part... pun intended.
John Pryce (Peron) was great and brought a lot to an underwritten role. "She Is A Diamond" was great.
The only complaint about the DVD is there are no special features.
I want to see these features on a 10th anniversray DVD:
"You Must Love Me" video
"You Must Love Me" from the Academy Awards
The A&E Biography of Eva Peron
Evita stage footage (Broadway and West End)
The Making of Evita
Cast Interviews
Director's Commentary
French and Spanish dubs
Newsreel footage of the Perons
Is that too much to ask for?

EVITA on filmI agree with Andy; there's just no point in getting a DVD if it doesn't have extras that make things worthwhile. I'm all for double disc special editions!
As far as the film itslef is concerned, I think the structure of the screenplay is the major weak point. That said, it's probably the best film adaptation of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical to date (JCS and Phantom were both disasters). The production design is phenomenal and I think the cast does a really good job throughout.
However, I must say that I hate the shot where Antonio Banderas closes those doors and then looks directly into the camera with that little pose. That awkward little moment of staging just about ruins the whole film for me! I find it immensely annoying.

The whole movie was a disgrace to the piece.

The only big flaw, to me, that the film had was that Antonio's voice was far too paper-thin for my tastes, not powerful enough for the character. His acting was great though.

As and when they release a 'special edition' of the DVD with 'making of' and all the other 'extras' we've come to expect, I'll buy it. I'll stick to my VHS in the meantime.

Love it!I'm not usually a Madonna fan but I love this film!! I forget Madonna is who she is and just see Eva Peron. ADORE Antonio because he's so hot and I love his voice!!! I worked on a production of this (not as a musical though but as a piece of musical mime!) and seeing this film was great because it really reflected the mood of the piece and gripped the viewer from minute one. I cried too!!!

I think the show is fantastic, however the movie just didn't do it for me. I despise Madonna as Eva and Antonio as Che. The only good performance in it is from Johnathan Pyrce as Juan. He really devled much deeper into the part and brought out Peron the man rather than Peron the historical figure. Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin kicked Madonna and Banderas' but.

One of the most boring films ever made. Sorry, it's the truth.
I loved the leads, but there were only a couple of stand-out moments and songs.

I'm inclined to believe that's what they call an "opinion", not the "truth".

What is truth? Is truth unchanging law? We both have truths! Are mine the same as yours?

It seriously is hard to watch. I have yet to make it through in one sitting, yet I can listen to the OCR over and over.... The first time my mom saw it, she (not being a musicals person) got only about a half-hour into it before declaring it "unwatchable"
And I always get annoyed when Antonio Banderas looks into the camera. You're really not supposed to do that in films..

I thought it was great. Madonna and Antonio were okay in their roles (I actually liked the Che I saw in a community theater a lot more), not the best, but at least okay. What I liked was the production design. You could actually still see it being a show for the stage rather than being morhped into another Hollywood-style film. It looked both realistic and unrealistic at the same time. If that makes sense.

Madonna was adequate. her singing wasnt up to par with Lupone at all. she made Eva too sympathetic as well. Banderas was strong,Pryce brilliant in his subtlty. the film over all was a failed attempt but not without good moments.

I thought Madonna was a great actress, but she's an alto by the sound of it. Her "A New Argentina" was pathetic. The OCR's Evita had such a strong Soprano...Madonna is a weak pop-queen.

Of course she's awful. But I love her in Evita.

I agree with Salome on all counts, except or Banderas. I didn't like his Che very much, although his performence was better than Madonna's. Pyrce was the best in it.
