Buddy Layman: Male. An emotionally handicapped boy who is deathly afraid of water. Can be played anywhere from 15 to 18, depending on the actor cast in the part.
Jennie Mae Layman: Female. Buddy’s 18-year old sister, very protective of him and their father. Had to become the “woman” of the house when her mother died and takes that role very seriously.
Ferris Layman: Male. Late 30s to early 40s. Buddy’s father. Tries the best he can to be a good father, but he is somewhat lost without his wife. Wants to do the right thing for his family – especially Buddy – but can’t bear to hurt his children in any way.
C.C. Showers: Male. Late 20s to early 30s. A preacher who looks not to find, but to lose a flock. He desperately wants to help people, but doesn’t really believe that he can, but continues to try to do so.
Norma Henshaw: Female. Late 30s to early 40s. A bible-thumpin’ true believer!
Darlene Henshaw: Female. Same age as Jennie Mae - 18. Very interested in boys. A bit full of herself.
Goldie Short: Female. Late 30s to early 40s. A quiet woman who wants to believe in something and therefore is willing to believe in almost anything. Part of Norma’s circle.
Basil Bennett: Male. Late 30s to late 40s. A farmer who also “doubles” as the local doctor. A philosopher of sorts.
Luella Bennett: Female. Mid 30s to mid 40s. Married to Basil. Also part of Norma’s circle, but is a doubting contrast to Goldie.
Melvin Wilder: Male. Mid to late 20s. A farmhand who’s been in the army and therefore is “a man of the world.”
Dewey Maples: Male. Early 20s. A farmhand who is amazed by most things in the world and has never been outside of Zion. Very straight forward and honest.
Where in Tenneesse are you doing this? I live in Nashville. I did this show once upon a time in highschool myself.
