The Concept Recording.I bought the concept recording, at a second hand Record Store. I am quite dissapointed in it. The Broadway Recording, is twenty times better. However, I think it's cool-- to see Evita in it's infancy.

yes the concept recording is dreadful. Julie Covington and paul Jones are terrible. and Colm Wilkinson really didnt sing half as well as he did in Les Miz.
plus alot of the extraneous stuff that was mercifully cut is groanable
"great men dont grow on trees
I'm one i aint gonna freeze
dictators dont grow on skis!"
ugh!

I don't think the concept recording is dreadful at all. Alot of the cut stuff is very interesting and many of the orchestrations are superior to their replacements.
Colm Wilkinson, I think, sings very well and has a much better interpretation of the chraracter than Patinkin.
What is wrong witth Covington?
Agreed, Paul Jones is bad. Rice and Lloyd Webber wanted Ian Gillan to play the role.
Tony Christie is the best Magaldi ever.
I believe, the Broadway recording is highly overrated.

ugh. Covington's voice is thin and lacking in emotion. the concept lyrics are bad, the orchestration is bad..sounds like a copy of JCS. and no one comes close to Mandy as Che he is perfection.

Mandy as Che is... Mandy.
It's all about what you heard first, I got the OBC and the concept album on the same day and I think both have their strenghts and weaknesses.

Anyone that thinks the Concept Recording is better than the OBC Recording--really needs to re-examine it, one more time. The Concept Recording is what it is... a Concept. Evita in it's infancy, obviously had bugs. There is a lot that came on the OBC, that isnt on the Concept. Such as "Perons Latest Flame". I find Convington, dreadful...very dreadful. I think the OBC recording remains superior among all Evita Recordings, I have not listened to the new one. But I doubt it has changed.

It's very much a matter of what you heard first.
I'm not saying the concept recording would be better than the OBC, I just don't think it's as bad as people say it is and I like many things that are on the concept album but were cut/changed for the original production with Elaine paige.

I think it's a fine album.
EVITA has always seemed to me to be a "work in prgress." Rice and Lloyd Webber may have been saying on this, OLC and OBC "See, this is what we have done so far. Pretty good, don't you think?"
The Motion Picture Soundtrack is almost (to me) like the complete vision of the project. "Okay, here's what we think it should sound like. We think it's done." seems to be the thought proicess of Rice/Lloyd Webber.
Covington is an underrated Eva. I love her performance. Shows Eva to be a strong woman. "I'll kick you in the balls no matter who you are!" is what I get from her.
Wilkinson shines as Che. He steals the show, and I think he's better here than anything else he's ever done. So raw and unafraid.
Paul Jones is a good Peron. At Rice's own admission, Peron should have had more material.
...
I really don't like comparing albums. There's really no point.
It's EVITA, it's great, it sold. It Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice at their peak.
So shut up.
Andy.

Yes, Yes and you seem to be the final authority. Okay...

That's how it works.

Although, I would hardly say the film is the final and finished product...

Not true...what about this new production of Evita? I can see that there are some changes.... in listening to clips.
Evita is the best Webber show I believe. I dont know, I personally love Superstar...more than Evita...but to me, Evita is more sophistcated, more well rounded... And you are right, it has gone through many changes. I find the Concept Recording, although it may be my least favorite--an interesting testament to the life of Evita (the play)

I absolutely HATE Covington's voice. Just not as powerful as Patti LuPone. I accidentally bought the concept recording, thinking I'd hear LuPone. Boy, was I in for a surprise! Luckily, some loser bought it used from me off Amazon. Now I need to get the London recording. That's the one with Patti, right?
I didn't know that Evita was a "work in progress" though.

The London recording has Elaine Paige, and it's a bit tougher to find (out of print, IIRC). You want the Original Broadway Cast, which is fairly readily available.

I agree LuPone kicks ass...in anything she does. Shes definitely my favorite Eva. And Mrs. Lovett, and Norma Desmond...and anything she does.

On the OBC I have a problem understanding Evita and Peron at times. But I have never listened to the concept album. Mandy is the man. I really like colm but I dont see him as Che. Mandy is Che

Thats kind of funny, because I believe Patti and Mandy probably have the most "pronounced" voices. Especially Mandy!!!!

I didnt say Mandi I said evita and peron. Mandy played che and is amazing. BUt I will say isnt as bad as I once thought but peron is still tough to undrstand at times.
