The children's names

The names of the Von Trapp children were changed for the musical and film.

Anyone have an idea of what the real names were? Mybe list them like this:

Liesel = [insert name here]
etc. etc.

And are any of them still alive?

Thanks,
Andy.

The real names of the children were (from oldest to youngest) Maria, Rupert, Agathe, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna and Martina. Captain von Trapp and Maria (the governess - not his daughter Laughing ) later had three children: Rosmarie, Eleonore and Johannes. Here is where I got the info from:

http://www.plymouth.edu/theatre_coll/som/trapps.htm

And here is some interesting information about them.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt it, but I guess it's possible.

The real story of the von Trapps is very interesting. Sure, it's a great musical, but the real version is so much better!

Actually, I believe some of them are still alive. After all, this was only 60 or so years ago. Gretl (or "Martina") was, what, 5? So she'd be in her late 60's. I remember one of the times I did this show, the director told us about the Von Trapp Family Lodge, which is in, like, Vermont. Anyways, it was founded by the REAL Maria and Captain (Georg?) von Trapp and I believe is still owned/run-by some of the existing von Trapp family members. I could be totally wrong, though.

I thought the oldest was a guy? I remember seeing an interview where his family always teases him that he's immortalized wearing a dress.

I'm pretty sure some of them where alive when the anniversary edition of the DVD came out not too long ago. I think they did an interview, or a commentary? Something. Wow, I'm helpful tonight.

Rupert was the oldest, and then (I think) Maria. The order is the same as far as genders are concerned, except that "Friedrich" and "Liesl" are swapped.

So here's kind of how it goes:

Liesl = Rupert
Friedrich = Maria
Louisa = Agathe
Kurt = Werner
Brigitta = Hedwig
Marta = Johanna
Gretl = Martina

Hedwig is such a sexy name!

So, why were the names changed?

To make them sound more stereootypical/Protect the i.d's of the actual people.

Agathe is the oldest, Maria was hired to mostly to look after the captains ill daughter, also called Maria. I read the book when I was really young and it took me a while to like it because its so different from the film version, but I then got to like the book for itself.
The Captain died in real life and I cried when I read the part where he passes away. I'm going to have to read it again soon actually.

This might sound like a dumb question but whats is the name of the book i'd really like to read it x

The book is called "The Von Trapp Family Singers" I believe, I haven't read it in a while, and there is at least one sequel, I don't think I actually finished that one. The book is definitely worth reading

I am glad they changed the names--I know that I wouldn't want my real name being used in a world-wide musical!

Plus...no offense to the real Von Trapps...the names in the movie/musical are much more catchy. I can never remember the real names! Hehe!
