The Chalk Garden?

Okay so I know it's not a musical, but I know that a lot of you have a lot of knowledge about straight plays as well. Sadly, I can't find much information about the characters online, so I'd like to ask you all to help me out Smile

A pro theatre in my area is doing The Chalk Garden as one of their shows for next season. I know that one of the main characters, Laurel, is supposed to be 16 (like me), and I know that she has some issues and stuff. I also know that there is another character named Olivia, but I'm not sure if she is also a teenager.

Would Olivia be a part that I, as a 16-going-on-17 year old girl, could audition for?

If so, does anyone have any insight into her character or the character of Laurel?

Thanks in advance Smile

Love,
Leah

Contact Melindaisy.
Her husband directed our community theatre's production of it and she was in it as well.

It's a wonderful show, btw. However, I do not feel capable of giving you adequate advise.

Thanks so much! It seems like a great show. I'll PM Melindaisy... hopefully she wont think it's too weird.

The funny thing about hatred, is at the time, it seems so reasonable.

Umm, what?

a line from the show that rings true to me. I mean, it makes a lot of sense, the murderer nanny says it to Laurel on their first meeting when Laurel says that she hates her mother.

Just wanted to give you a heads up about professional theaters casting teenagers.

Seems like prof theaters tend to cast down. I'm 25 and often get called back for 16 and 17 year old roles.

I could be wrong though. But it does seem that they assume the older actress has more training and more maturity. And if they hire someone 18+, they don't have to hire a child wrangler. You may wanna ask Chev, but there are equity guidelines concerning minors. I think theaters may just try avoid that.

So just givin you a heads up, depending on the level of the theater, you may be up against adults. Bring your A game, girl!

I do know that this theatre has no prob casting kids, they have cast me in productions before, starting at age 9. My child wrangler was fab, she had a pet squirrel and a tattoo on her hiney Smile

I will probably be up against some adults though, they did once cast a 21 year old as a 12 year old (she did look it.) so I will definitely be bringing my A game! Smile
