The Boat sceneOkay it's been awhile since I've seen the show, but isn't there like three different sets of phantoms and christines??? I heard that the main set runs off as the mirror is turning around and a stand in set comes in and runs down into the floor as the song starts. Then as they start to cross the bridge, another set is walking on it going down. The main set is off stage getting into the boat and waiting. Then as the bridge set runs off the main set comes out in the boat and finishes the song. Anyone else hear this before?? It makes sense. I also heard that the whole song of Phantom is prerecorded. The actors never sing it live. The voices are just played in sync with the orchestra. Anyone ever hear this rumor?? How do they get the words perfectly in sync with the orchestra??One more question. How in the world do they get the boat to move?? I have the movie and it showed on the 2nd DVD backstage stuff and it showed someone holding a remote control. What kind of motor is in that thing? Where is it at? And lastly, how do we not hear the motor over the music, or is that one reason that song is pretty loud? Sorry I know this is a lot of questions, but I'm curious. Any help is greatly appreciated! |

Just read these:

If you're asking a question, there's no need to reinforce the notion by adding another question mark. P.P.S. Paragraph breaks are also good. They make your posts easier to read. Try it sometime. |

hey... i just wanted to tell you that... yes there are 3 sets of actors... but only the 1st and 2nd verses are pre recorded... the orchestra is always live though... they are able to play in sync because the conductor uses a click track that goes along with the singing... also christines high "e" at the end is prerecorded... the overture.. is NOT prerecorded.... also the motor is in the front half of the boat... the motor is basically just 2 wheels and a battery... the remote is controlled by a stage hand off stage

"The Phantom and Christine who walk across the stage are doubles; the pair who walk across the travelators are also doubles. " This is partly true, In london the double phantom and christine walk accross the travelator once and the real set switch with them. |

Thanks cellodude06. I didn't even notice someone else replied to my post. I've always been curious. So it's kinda like a remote control car like kids play with. One big ass battery some wheels. That's pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I think I did remember hearing something about this. That is very intersting, and I can't believe it was pre-recorded, every single performance. That's really amazing, especially since this is live theater. I saw it 3 yrs ago and I didnt notice, so they must do a good job of covering it up. Has it been this way since the show opened opening night?

Obviously the first part of the song has to be pre-recorded. The doubles are there because the real Erik and Christine have only about two minutes to run around back stage and get in the boat. And you can't sing if you're doing that. I don't think anyone's ever tried to cover it up, seeing as it's obvious and understandable. Would anyone really want Erik and Christine to begin singing their part of the song while they're back stage, getting into the boat, and hearing them get all breathy and the background noise that's going on? |

Yes...that about describes it. From time to time, things go wrong with it. I've personally seen a performance when, as it emerged on stage, it struck a candelabra. You could hear a nasty cracking sound as the head broke off one of the sphinx-like figures at the base of the candelabra. A minute or so later, it nearly ran Hugh Panaro down when it didn't turn in time. He later explained they'd put someone new at the controls for the performance. He was understandably annoyed. |
