There are so many great characters in Into the Woods that have a lot of potential, but since I had to choose, I chose the Witch. The witch is my favorite character in the show, which is what it all comes down to.

im the minority!
i chose the bakers wife!
why?
i think most people can relate and she is very empathic
the witch is great too
i think she might be most favorite because of who played her in obc?

Yes, yes, I jumped on the Bandwagon

The Witch- amazing role!
Salome

Baker's Wife is not only the best role in the show, and the leading role,..she is also the hardest role Sondheim ever wrote for.

the witch while good is essentailly a supporting role. and it doesnt take alot of acting tlaent ot pull her off well. just a good grasp of her hcaracter type and strong stage pressence.

Baker's Wife is so complex and has so many layers that its almst impossible to get the role 100 percent right.

Actually, I think that the witch would be a very hard role to pull off. One you have to have a very strong singer and an actor because if the witch cant act then you might as well cut her out of the show. As for the bakers wife she is a great part but she mostly just has to have a great voice and some acting range she dosnt have nearly as many emotions as the witch has and she dosnt change her emotions as much as the witch dose. But of course this is just may opinion.

What?/ its the eact opposite. the Baker's Wife needs a stronger range of emotions. love, frustration, lust, despondancy, she needs a strong sense of humor..and the actress needs to know how to ride thel ine. "Moments in the wood" is one of the single hardest songs to get down emotionally.

the witch has 3 emotions..revenge, maternal affection and selfishness. not hard ot get down compared ot baker's wife.

Lapine himself stated that he only saw 2 actresses ever get the baker's wife right..one of course was the great joanna gleason who won the Tony. (notice Benadette wasnt even nominated ).

take a lcose look at the show again. you'll see.

I think it's a toss up! The Witch and the Bakers Wife are both amazing rolls. They both need strong actresses with great voices. As the saying goes, "To each their own." They both bring something unique to the stage. The Bakers Wife, as you said is very emotional and stubborn and the Witch is very proud and very intent on her sucess at becoming beautiful again.
