The Baker's Wife

I downloaded the orginal cast recording a few weeks ago (of course I was brought to it by Patti) and I was blown away by how beautiful it is. I believe that it's one of, if not the best Stephen Schwartz score (and I'm not a fan of him. at all). I wonder why it never made it to Broadway and flopped in the West End... It's so glorious.

I just wanted to know what you all thought of it. Smile

Baker's Wife history

Hi - So although you have not been a Schwartz fan before, I guess you are now -- at least for Baker's Wife. It was Stephen's first score that drew more on classical and folk traditions (of French music in this case) than on pop/rock music. He played classical piano when he studied at Julliard before he got into popular music, and I think you can hear the influence in the Baker's Wife score.

I include some of the history of The Baker's Wife on my site at
http://www.musicalschwartz.com/the-bakers-wife-info.htm

Also, there's a section about Baker's Wife in NOT SINCE CARRIE. The author believes a major part of the problem is that it would always be a better movie than a play. Producer David Merrick hoped to turn it into a showy musical like some of his others, and that's not really what the material supports.

As you may know, there was a really successful rewrite/revival at Paper Mill Playhouse a couple of years ago.
