The "I've Had Swine Flu" Thread.

Anyone else had / got it?

I feel terrible! I'm in quarentine (sp?) in my own home for like a week...

I'm missing tap classes and vocal lessons and so much work at school, I'm never gonna be able to catch up with it!

And did you take tamiflu? I'm reluctant to take it because of the side effects but I suppose it must be done. Sad
kakoforever

I had it. It was HELL. The flu on steroids. I didn't take Tamiflu, but my mom started getting it, and took it, and avoided it. I missed a week and a half of class.
Pannic

Not me. Vaccinated.
wtfchuck

I had it in august, 2 weeks before the wizard of oz. I was at home doing very little for a week and felt shit. Didnt take any tamiflu though.
Vanessa20

I haven't had it, but...

What does it feel like at the beginning? Right now I feel mostly fine, but for the last week or so I've had a tiny little pain in the back of my throat and a little bit of a runny nose, both on-and-off. Is that how it starts? Or am I probably just having allergies or something?
actor

I haven't Confused Is it still going around in England? I thought it was pretty much out...
High-baritonne

It is extreme here in Norway, people are actually being sent home from school if they sneeze too much. There has also been declared a state of emergency which says that anyone can be away from work for up to 8 days if they suspect that they have the flu. This also applies for the schools. One of these days we were only 15 out of 28 students in class. I've already had it, and I infected half my class since I went to school without knowing that I had the flu.

But I don't know anybody who has died, so I don't see the big issue.
curlyhairedsoprano91

Had it. IT SUCKED.
Katie-chan

Vanessa20: Apparently, it starts with a fever and a cough/sore throat. Once you start having these symptoms, you're supposed to stay at home, and a week or two later, you'll be over it.
You probably just have a cold Smile Especially if you've already had it for a week.
Mungojerrie_rt

I've had it. So have 2/3 of us here at uni. I got over it with no medication at all and still had to go to uni.

Thanks so much. I don't have a fever or a cough. I feel relieved now. Very Happy

I've been lucky. Very Happy

How about foot amputations? A girl here had to have her feet amputated due to complications with swine flu, a week or so before her 18th birthday.

I don't like that people have just come to accept it. Just because your friend hasn't died from it or complications related to it DOESN'T mean that you won't.

If it's something you can stop with fairly simple measures, then why not? Personally, I don't get colds and I've never had a flu. Why? Because I wash my hands (a lot, they're currently dry and peeling because of it). Because I don't put my hands on my face. I don't talk to people who sneeze on me and who don't cover their faces when they cough. And I live in the desert.
Beagle On Stage

When my beagle was younger, I took him to his doctor because he appeared to have a rash on his abdomen and a fever. It turned out that he just had a warm face and a sunburned belly from sleeping on his back in his yard. The doctor wrote him a prescription for glorified aloe vera gel and special dog sun lotion. What a sweet beagle.
happyguava

It went through my a cappella group. Two of us confirmed, and we're certain two others had it as well. I was too sick to go to the doctor to find out for sure, I could do nothing but stay in bed for days!
musialman

There have been a lot of people in my area to get it and lots of school closings. Our school is giving free vaccinations. Anybody who signs up gets to miss an hour of school. Swine 09 is like the new snow day.

I don't know wether this should be read as sarcasm, but it is not hard to get the flu when you go to a school of performing arts. We are too physical and too much together! I spend almost 10 hours at school every day from 8 - 6. Sometimes from 8 - 9, and others only from 8 - 4, but as the circumstances are now, it is hard to go to our school and escape it. We also have ethanol containers all over our school. I know about over 100 people who have had it! None of them are dead, and all of them are just fine now.

Give it time.
Mistress

I know in my city, there were two stories of kids literally dropping dead of the flu. They were fine one minute, and literally dropped unconcious the next. Kinda creepy. I haven't had it yet, But I know one girl at school who has. They're telling people to stya home of they feel in anyway unwell. Oh, and my old elementary school just across the street from me is now a vaccination clinic.
wicked_boy

Mine started with my feeling sleepy and tired, then a headache, sore throat and runny nose all in the space of an hour or so... That lasted for a day, then last night I had a fever, which carried onto this morning. I've literally been sleeping all day. At one point I couldn't even lift myself out of bed because of the aching joints.

At the moment I've just got a runny nose, cough and the sneezes, but I suppose I'll get worse again.

I've not taken tamiflu but I've had paracetmol to keep the heacaches away.
Dax

Hmf..

There have been a few reported deaths in the US.

Of course, compare this against the 30k+ deaths from common flu every year, and this seems much ado about nothing.

It's like a badge of honor or something. They should make t-shirts.

"I Survived Swine Flu"

Pictures of pretty piggies with tissues on them.

You know, not having ever had any kind of flu or cold is actually kind of a bad thing. It means your body hasn't developed the anti-bodies to fight the infection if it comes back, and thus hasn't built up any sort of immunity. I used to get knocked on my ass by the Flu as a kid during Winter. Now, I pretty much go through one or two minor colds in the Winter season, and that's about it. No flu, nothing. It's my elder sister that keeps on getting the bad infections. I haven't had a flu vaccine for a while either...

There is such a thing as being too hygenic. Your never gets the chnace to build up immunities and what-not, and then when flu season comes, you get the worst of it. It may also be why severe allergies are getting more and more prevalent. The body gets over-protcted and becomes extremely senstive to the small things...
Damask and Dark

I had it in May. I took Tamiflu for it and I think it really helped. I felt really awful for a few days, and then it took a while to get back to 100% afterward because my chest felt congested for a long time.
MunkustrapQC

I had it this summer.
Wasn't THAT bad.

That's bad, in a way it's "good" for you to get the usual flu every few years and get a cold every now and then. That way your body can build up an immunity to any pathogens (nasty virus's that cause nasty stuff to happen to your body) that may enter your body. If you never get a mild flu your body will not have any type of antibodies to fight it off. Meaning, if you do happen to get swine flu or a nasty type of flu, you're more at risk as your body wont be able to defend itself.
Dax

I bumped into an acquaintance that I see every now and then at work. He was sick, and he told me that his child had a mild case of swine flu earlier the previous week. I shook his hand and said try not to die before me.
And yesterday, I felt as if I were fighting "something" off.
And now, I'm in the middle of a workout...feeling groovy.

Perhaps the Karma train will wreck me later.

Because viruses totally don't mutate. Ever. Rolling Eyes

There are also over 200 viruses that cause the common cold. On the other hand, the flu is caused generally by only 1 or 2 viruses each year (ever heard of flu vaccine? That's why) So, no, getting a cold generally DOESN'T help you not get a flu.

Btw, yes, I've studied biology & mircobiol (viruses fall under this, btw) for 2/3 of my uni degree.

If you're body has never been exposed to some icky bugs the symptoms of an icky bug are gonna be much worse when/if you eventually get one.

Can you stop referring to a virus as an icky bug? It's just weird. My body knows how to fight - that's why if I ever get sick, it leaves me within a day.

Just got diagnosed with it. I feel disgusting.

I want to cry. Sad
