The 2005 Broadway Cast: SOkay, maybe that's unfair... The cast is fantastic, but their choice to have the cast play in the orchestra was a horrible one. The music isn't anywhere near powerful enough.

I disagree completely...I think it made the show and music all the more powerful. It was...haunting is the best way I can put it,. Yes, it's not as big...but somehow this small, initimate pproduction works so much better for Sweeney Todd than the big fancy Harold Prince version...I think it was just too much...stuff. The sparseness of the revival gets rid of all the unneccassary razzle-dazzle and leaves with just the bare story and characters. Razzle-dazzle works for some shows, but not so much for this, though the Hearn/Lansbury film and the new Depp movie bioth still have a special place in my heart. This also probably why I like the manual sets in the Hearn/Lansbury film. There was something about watching the chorus move around the set pieces that just fit the show so well.

I was just thinking that. On the DVD I loved it everytime the cast members would go out and switch the set. It made me happy, and in the revival it happens constantly. It's just amazing and intimate. I love the directorial choices, and the musical director did a good job of breaking up a massive orchestral score into those few intruments that they were given.

I saw it twice...once in 2005 with Lupone and Cerveris and once this year when it came to Toronto...and honestly I think it's a really awesome and interesting choice. Though I could tell a lot of other people in the audience did not agree.
I think it depends on the person, but I thought it was clever and really amazing that the actors not only had to sing Sondheim's lyrics, but also play his music...wowzers.

Whilst it is impressive... I dislike the "lacking" the music has. I like layer on layer on layer in my music.

That's how I felt.
I'm guessing it's probably a different experience to hear it on the album instead of seeing the show live. But the album didn't impress me all that much.

I found the approach a strong one..but when Doyle did it with Company,Amadeus etc..it became a gimmick.
wasnt fond of most of the casting though.

I love Patti, but sometimes I just didn't fancy her Lovett. Ceveris was great, though.
As for having them double as the orchestra, it's one of those things where I feel it works well in some cases and not so well in others. I think that's why I was so thrilled with the film because the orchestrations are so lush, compared to the revival.

In the revival they at least did what they could with the voices they had... as opposed to the film where they decide they don't need a chorus at all. Not that I'm bitter or anything...

Oh no, I don't hate the revival's orchestrations, actually I quite like "Poor Thing" and "By The Sea". (:

Interestingly out of the recordings I have (Original, Revival, Movie), I actually prefer the revival the most. Even though the orchestrations aren't as lush, the music feels far more intimate just knowing that the one cast is doing everything. I'll be able to judge the revival show as a whole when I go see it in a few months.

Patti sucked..Cerveris was weak...the female pierelli was really assinsine. only Jacoby as Turpin and Beggar woman were stand outs.
