Tevye the Dairyman/Tevye's Daughters?Okay so since Fiddler is based off of the stories by Sholem Aleichem I went to Barnes and Noble and got the book "Tevye the Dairyman and the Railroad Stories"....but I heard that Fiddler was based of the stories called "Tevye's Daughters"....I'm confused. In "Tevye the Dairyman" there are individual chapters about each daughter...
Is "Tevye the Dairyman" the same book as "Tevye's Daughters" or is there another book that Sholem Aleichem wrote with the same characters?
Anybody know?

They are two different books. However having only read Tevye's Daughters I couldn't say for sure whether or not they chapters on the daughters are the same.

If memory serves, the "Daughters" book is a sequel and tells the story of what happens to the daughters after. For example, I believe Hodel ends up leaving Perchik.

Ohmygosh that is so sad if she does! I will have to get it. If that's true then basically all of the daughters ended up with generally unhappy marriages. Tsatyl's husband dies, Hodel leaves perchick, chava leaves fyedka, shpritze commits suicide and bielke is forced to flee to america....wow...that is so sad.

whaaa? that is so sad.
however, in reality Chava and Fyedka would probably go on to be killed in the Holocaust 30 some years later.

In Tevye the Dairyman and the railroad stories Chava leaves Fyedka when tevye and tzeitle are forced to leave anatevka so that she can go with them. but in the show the time period between chava's marriage and tevye leaving is much shorter than in the book. In the book after Chava is married the younger daughters are married off/shpritze dies/golde dies/motel dies before they are forced to leave anatevka.

I played Perchik in 2004 and the girl who played Hodel took great delight in reminding me of that fact every night during our run. At interval we would be waiting for the second act to start to the side of the stage. We'd be talking about our next scene where we declare our love for each other and she would always put in "It doesn't really matter - I'm leaving you eventually".
