Teeth

The world would be a prettier place if people would care more about their teeth! Every time you talk to people, take a picture, and smile your teeth are shown...so why is it that SOOO many people have nasty crooked, and/or yellow teeth.

White teeth are beautiful. Yellow teeth are NASTY! Get them bleached. It is not very expensive to do it any more, and some dentists will do it for free on first appointment. Also whitening toothpaste, a sonicare/oralB toothbrush, and Listerine will all help on maintenance. Plus you can always use whitening strips (though they take longer than the box says they do). Whitening gum can't hurt either.

Sorry about the rant, but I just sat through a casting session, and like maybe 10 people out of 70 had nice white teeth, while the others all had yellow. It's gross.
Beagle On Stage

It's really unfortunate that any of this had to be said, but it's all true. It's just good hygiene.
bare24601!

I love using white strips. =) I didn't even know they made whitening gum but I want to try it now..

I do my best to take care of my teeth. I brush them at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day. They are still semi yellow, and I've been told by my dentist not to try any kind of whitening. I have some kind of (hereditary) condition where I'll randomly get white spots on my teeth, and the dentist says whitening would make my teeth look worse.

I know this isn't the case for most people, but not everyone can help it. At least here -> Very Happy <- my teeth are white!
kozafluitmusique

I need to use whiting strips someday. Thanks to me using an electric toothbrush, they are shinier, but thanks to coffee ... they get stained. oops.
fjays

Oh, diddums!
LaurelDP

I come from a family with horrible teeth, it has really made me pay close attention to mine.
I'm so grateful that mine are naturally fairly straight. And they aren't terribly discolored, despite lots of coffee drinking.

I'm actually really bothered right now because I don't have insurance, so I haven't been to the dentist in over a year. When I was insured I was very precise about scheduling my teeth cleanings. I'm going to become a full time student next semester just so I can be insured again.

Teeth are a big part of appearance. A friend of mine is a dancer and can't get any jobs, and I'm convinced it's because of his gnarly smile. The fact that they are crooked isn't even the worst of it, they make him look young and goofy, like a 14 year old that needs to get braces.

I could pass for fourteen if I tried hard enough. It wouldn't be because of scary teeth though.
SmallTownIngenue

I absolutely hate my smile/teeth. I take proper care of them, they just never seem to get perfect white. Sad I think it also has to do with how pale I am...contrast. I've always wanted to give white strips/whitening a try.

My teeth aren't horribly crooked, but I do have a baby tooth on the left side of my mouth that will NEVER fall out, despite the fact that I am 18 years old. My dentist tends to ignore it as well.... Confused Although I would rather have a funny baby tooth than get it pulled out and have a missing tooth.
idTAPthat89

3 years of braces as a pre-teen paid off Very Happy I take good care of my teeth.

But yes, gross teeth is a huge turn off for me.
BwayJuvinile

Anything outside of White, is really gross to me...even if they are clean, it still doesn't seem clean when it has any shade of yellow to it. When I got my braces off, I had my teeth bleached. Then I got a bleach tray kit from my dentist, and would re-whiten my teeth after every single 6month cleaning. I just used my last bleach tool from my original bleaching, which was years ago. I also pre-rinse with Listerine whitening, brush with Advanced Whitening, and rinse with Listerine Total Care which leaves my teeth shiny. Orbitz white works slightly, but everything else is my normal maintenance. I always get complements on my teeth from random people.
kozafluitmusique

Maggie, I had the same situation with the baby tooth (my paternal grandmother did, too) and hers is still in her mouth, I think. I had to get mine removed after I had braces.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And sometimes it's just so hard to whiten them, even if you take so much care of them, just because bleaching your teeth actually isn't that great. I mean, when I got braces off, I had teeth whitened, I get them whitened sometimes at the dentist. They're not perfectly white, I don't think, but electric toothbrush works wonders and I really should take better care of them.

I've visited dentists in three different states and never had anyone offer free whitening.

In the interest of safety, please read the following article on teeth whitening:
http://www.medicinenet.com/teeth_whitening/article.htm
there are a few instances in which people should not attempt to whiten or bleach their teeth.
And sometimes tooth discoloration is not from stains that can be removed by whitening products:
http://www.colgate.com/app/Colgate/US/OC/Information/OralHealthBasics/CommonConcerns/ToothDiscoloration/ToothDiscoloration.cvsp

So please, everyone, check with your dentist about tooth whitening, if you're interested in doing it, and don't be bothered by someone on the internet who is irritated by the superficial aesthetics of other people's teeth.

OMG the same here, except I have a back tooth instead of dicoloration. Two of my other cousins had this and the dentist had predicted it for me since the start. (even with all my "dental care") I wanted to try Invisiline but since it's in the back I can't use it. What I want to do is get braces then switch to Invisiline. With shows and school braces are not what I want to be remembered by!

I'm told my teeth are nice... I hate them.

I'm gonna get them whitened when I'm older (to go along with my nose job and botox... No lie.)

My teeth are healthy (front one's chipped, but has a good repair job, so most never notice), but I do have an overbite...hence why I seldom bare my teeth when smiling in photos.

Here's a (rather creepy) visual example:

Then you just get a bridge...it's really no big deal. Both of my outside incisors (The teeth to the sides of my two front teeth) are missing. Apparently, that's due to genetics or something...ANYWAY...When I had braces, I had fake teeth put on them with no problems at all. Then I had a retainer with two fake teeth on it...(Talk about a good way for your dentist to get you to wear your retainer!) And finally, I got my first bridge, then had it replaced with veneers and a better bridge. I hope to get dental implants at some point, but they are pretty expensive...

So, minus the expense, I really love how my teeth look! Smile

It's somewhat of a distant shot so you may not be able to make it out, but because there is a slight overbite, it means that my upper front teeth have larger spaces in between them than the lower ones and they rest ahead of their opposing lower incisors if I were to actually close my teeth together in parallel (if I close my teeth and show it, I usually bring my lower jaw forward slightly so the front ones come together).

The fact that my lower teeth (no visible in the photo) are perfectly normal makes the two sets look rather, well, juxtaposed.
jazzygirlsings

Personally, I think you're making more of it than it is...I think they're pretty. Smile

Then again, I have stuff about myself that I am like that with...my thighs and butt being the things I am most insecure about!

What is the average cost of a bridge? I've never had braces either so I would have to go through that as well.....My dentist said to wait until my baby tooth fell out to get braces but I'm starting to think it never will...

Another question: Has anyone ever tried Invisaline? I'm wondering how effective that is...but last time I heard the waiting list for it is insane.

Hmm...to me, they just look like normal, boring, overbitten teeth with spaces, but if you insist... Razz
Quique

Meh.

I'd say 99.9% of the population has off-white teeth. Of course it's gross when they're actually
YELLOW, but you must really suffer on a day to day basis if even off-white grosses you out that much. Shocked

My teeth are nice. Not unnatural porcelain white but not gross yellow either. Though I'd say they're whiter than most.

I admire your, um...whitening regime? But, personally, teeth that are too white are just as distracting as yellow teeth, imo. Razz

I'm just saying that shouldn't stop you from smiling in pictures, which you had mentioned earlier...

And SmallTownIngenue...I'm not sure how much it would cost now, as I've pretty much had bridges ever since I was 17-18 years old...So I'm sure the price has changed. I'm pretty sure it was covered by insurance.

When I had my latest bridge done, I wasn't insured and (since it IS kinda fancy- and keep in mind I have to have 2 bridges, technically) it cost around $2,000-$3,000. (Payment plans were accepted) I'm pretty sure, since you would only need one dental implant, that it would be more worth it to get the tooth implanted from the get-go than to get a bridge, but that's just me...

Woah, for half a second I thought this thread was going to be about the movie entitled with the same name hahahahahahahha.

Anyways, teeth ARE a funny thing. Personally, I think it's GROSS when I see people with REALLY crooked TOP teeth, and/or stained teeth from when they had braces and didn't brush.

But, if someone has decently white teeth that are only slightly crooked, that's fine. Why spend $5,000 plus to fix something that isn't THAT big of a problem, you know?

As for myself, when I was around 8, I was on antibiotics that had a side affect that stained my teeth slightly yellow. I've been Crest White Stripping for almost 2 years though, and even back when it wasn't *that* much of a problem. But here's a picture of my teeth now:

I guess I rather like mine lolol. I just need to get more whitening strips soon Smile

BAHAHAHA so did I!!!

I've had so many dental issues...my oh my. Everything from braces to having my jaw broken, and then reset, in order to widen the space in my mouth. As of now, my teeth are straight, except for one, on the lower set. When I smile, I don't show much of my bottom teeth anyway, so it's not really an issue, but I am a little self-concious about it. My teeth are pretty white - I have a whitening set that I use about once a month.
Catherine

I'm quite happy with my teeth now. They're all the same colour - well, apart from ones at the back because of this stupid enamel deffiency, but you can't see those - and I only have a little gap between my two front teeth.

But I agree with Quique, no one is going to have perfectly white teeth, and tbh I don't know if I'd want them. Simon Cowell has them, and they're just scary. Completely yellow teeth though? Not good.
sylvesterm11

Two times with braces (once for 4 months in 3rd grade, again for about a year in 8th grade) paid off. I think my smile is my best feature. I try to get my teeth really white, but for health issues you're not supposed to do a bleaching/whitening regimine more than once in 6 months. I'm due for more whitening strips, because I like my teeth to be REALLY white - I'm so pale, so it's noticable if they're not immaculate.

I'm a really big stickler about my teeth. I like them. I just got back from the dentist and he was like "FABULOUS AS USUAL, MADISON." Yeah.

LadyOfTheLake wrote:

They wanted to do this to me! I was too chicken sh**.

My top jaw is like half the size of my bottom jaw. It's not very noticeable, so there was no way I was going to let them crack my head open just to create more space.
Especially because they wanted to do this when I was 17. No way was I going to walk around with a giant Elton John gap in my front teeth, with braces, when I was 17.
Nudelkopf

I had malocclusion, so had braces for about 14 months. But my teeth were always straight and white, but gappy. Yupp. You guess it, I sucked my thumb for about 15 years of my life.

At one stage I had this "butterfly wire" thingy in my mouth.. It had two big spikes on it, so if I tried to suck on something.. Well.. I'd get two big spikes in the roof of my mouth, wouldn't I? Sadly, it got bent.. so I was constantly being stabbed.. Buuuut my ortho didn't make me pay for it, because I had several months of continuous pain. Ha. (My orthodontist had to fly from Melbourne to my home town every few months to visit us (5hr flight???) - the joys of living in outback Australia!!)

After all that.. My teeth rock your socks.
lovesinging

I hate my teeth too. Thanks for reminding me of an insecurity Wink

Seriously though, when I had braces the cement somehow dyed my teeth to be more yellowish. I brush my teeth about 3 times a day, use whitening toothpaste, and occasionally go for the (expensive) whitening gum. It just hasn't made them better. (I also drink far too much tea.) I don't have enough cash to get them bleached. So sorry.

Implants versus Bridges

Dentist who is obviously pro-implant

A Reader's FAQ

Personally, if it's one or two teef...I'd see if I was a good candidate for implants. They would be permanent and from what I've read, they would be healthier for the jaw.

Everyone iseems to be scrutinizing the more public "appearance" when the more "private" side needs also to be addressed. How many here would date a person if you knew that person had to take his/her teeth out every night? Such a person, however appealing, may not seem so attractive if you knew that.
And of course, there is the simple act of chewing...

You can take that course at most colleges. It's just that you don't earn credits for it, and it doesn't show up on your transcript. You might call it a practi-cum.
