Teen Audition Songs and Suggestions

Hey everyone.

Something I wanted to bring up. Should a teen (let's say 13-16) sing songs about love and other older topics or are they too young? Are there certain topics teens should avoid (besides the obvious sexual songs)?

I'm a 14 years old girl with a soprano/mezzo soprano (I haven't exactly figured out my range yet but normally higher songs) with an okay belt. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions for me as well as I am working on my rep book. I have...
"Falling" from Smokey Joe's Cafe
"Journey to the Past" from Anastasia
"Girl I Mean To Mean" from The Secret Garden
"Fools Fall In Love" from Smokey Joe's Cafe (possibly...may be too young to sing it)
Forgot to add: Is "Kiss Her Now" from Dear World a good song for me?

Thanks.

As long as it's part of the character that you're auditioning for, it would be fine. It would be odd if you sang an overly sexual song for Annie, but not for Spring Awakening.

Personally, I get annoyed when ten year olds sing about the love of their life, but sometimes that's all there is in a simple range.

I'm 14. I sang I Confess from Footloose!, which is a song the dad sings about his dead son... and I got a supporting role.

It depends on what age group the show is. Usually if you're a teenager, you'll either audition for an adult theatre group or a youth theatre group. When you're auditioning for an adult group, be careful of your age. If you think that the song choice is too mature, don't sing it. But if you're auditioning for a youth group, investigate before the audition. Find out the ages of the other auditioners. When auditioning for a youth group, it's all relevant. If you're 14, unless you don't look your age, you'll probably be the equivalent of a 20 or 30 year old in adult theatre when you audition for a youth group. It will probably be ok to sing about love because of your age relevance to the other auditioners.

I have the same problem though. I'm 14 and I'm not really a strong singer, but I do have a favorite song in my rep I love to listen to, love to sing and I'm really good at singing. The problem is, the song ("You Don't Know This Man" from Parade) is way too mature for my age. I love singing it and it's good practice for me, but I'll never be able to sing it at an audition until I'm older.

A little older is alright if your voice can handle it, and if it is appropriate for the show. A few suggestions though:

"I Can Hear the Bells" - Hairspray
"The Trolley Song" - Meet me in St. Louis
"Gimme Gimme" - Thoroughly Modern Millie
"My New Philosophy" - You're a Good Man Charlie Brown
"I Enjoy Being a Girl" - Flower Drum Song
"I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta my Hair" - South Pacific
"Disneyland" - Smile
"Soon" - Thumbelina (Don't know if you can find music for this one)
