Tamyra Gray to play Mimi...

Popular American Idol season one finalist Tamyra Gray will join the company of Broadway's Rent on May 29, slipping into the shiny blue pants of dancer Mimi Marquez. She will remain with the long-running rock musical at the Nederlander Theatre through November 25.

Gray's run will overlap with recently announced returning OBC members Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, who begin their six-week stint on July 30.

The actress and singer made her Broadway debut as a replacement lead in Bombay Dreams after finishing fourth on the first season of American Idol. She has appeared on TV in Boston Public, What I Like About You and All of Us, as well as in the feature film, The Gospel. Gray also released a solo album called The Dreamer in 2004 and penned the songs "I Believe" for Idol winner Fantasia Barrino and "You Thought Wrong" for first season champion Kelly Clarkson.

That should be interesting. She's very talented. But I'm still very much against putting "names" into Rent. Perhaps they're desperate to get butts in seats...?

Anyways, back on topic, I think Tamyra could have the potential to be really good in the role! She definitely has a fantastic voice. I'll be interested to see how she does with the characterization/acting, and of course dancing to "Out Tonight," lol.

I'm surprised that AI is letting her do this... I thought you pretty much had to sign your life away to the producers if you go on the show, and I seem to remember a girl from another season who was invited to be Maureen on Broadway but the producers made her decline because it didn't fit in with the squeaky-clean AI image, lol. And she was only in the top 24 or whatever, but they still had her under a contract. Wonder why they've decided to let Tamyra (who made it pretty far) do the show?

I'm sorry, but I can't say I'm excited. Tamyra does not seem like Mimi to me...oh well. We'll just have to see how she does.

Not only is she playing Mimi, but they've got pictures up on BroadwayWorld now, and she has a completely new costume.

Short hair, big sweater and sparkly silver pants. I don't think she's wearing any of the original DRV outfits.

I dont think this is the first AI finalist to be in RENT, wasn't Constantine (forgets last name) in it as Roger at one point?

Of course it's to sell seats. That's the same reason Anthony and Adam will be in it.


It obviously means the end of Rent soon...

I mean, it's possible that they are changing the costume. They changed Maureens costume after the OBC. Why not Mimi?

i guess he was, but it was in the touring production, never actually on broadway

So do I, but I've seen Rent on Broadway, as have many others not in the Eastern Time Zone. Travel is not impossible.

It is if you have to convince your parents to bring their 3-kid family all the way to NY. I've already asked them if we can head over to NY in the future. They said yes...in a couple of years. Oh well. There is hope. Wink

I am freaking thrilled to see a Mimi who actually looks SICK. It makes my life.

I'm sure her make-up looks better onstage, any type of sick or stage make-up looks ridiculous up close.

of course. under all the lighting, it looks great tho. Im sure tamyra isnt the first to have "sick" makeup, right? Im gonna hafta keep an eye out on youtube for her - as well as for bootlegs of the show.

Most of the Mimis I've seen tend to fall on the side of "sex kitten" as opposed to "sick". Now, granted, I haven't liked a lot of the Mimis I've seen and if you're not going to play the role as sick, it doesn't matter how good the make up is, but even so...

I saw her perform about a month and a half ago, on my honeymoon. She was pretty good! I was surprised, because I had only seen her AI stuff, so I went into it thinking, yeah she can sing, but I bet she can't act. Of course she proved me wrong. The only song I didn't connect with her on was, Out Tonight. Sad, because I love that song, and well, it's one of her major songs! Compared to other recordings of Mimi's, I've heard, she's way up on my list.

I saw her this past Wednesday and thought she was great. She had the blue pants on but I don't remember the shirt. I couldn't see the makeup up close cuz I was close to the back of the theatre.
