I'm Defying Gravity

talent show

okay i know this is going to sound crazy and i'm going to hear crap about this.
so i'm singing defying gravity for my school talent show.
any tips?
please don't just say i shouldn't do it because i could probably do no justice to the song...
thanks Smile
music is my life!!!

don't impersonate any of the past elhabas - add your own specialness to the song. me and my friend did for good for her music performance piece for GCSE and she got 24/25! it's a good option, but make sure you don't just stand there and sing, or wander aimlessly...

it's a tricky song - you'll be fab!!

Very Happy Very Happy
Colombine

Thats a really hard song :S Iv tried it a couple of times, and I agree what music is my life!!! says. I thought that it should sound like Idina sang it. I checked out the score and It was kinda different Razz ´

But I wish you luck... ^_____________^'
wicked_boy

It's not a hard song, if you know how to sing correctly.
actor

I'd advise against it but if you must my advice would be to not push your voice where it doesn't want to go.
musicaltheatrefan

You shouldn't do it.

Idina Menzel can belt out that song, because she is a belter. You are probably around 15, and belting out songs at that age is very difficult and can ruin your voice. I'm not trying to be mean. I wouldn't recommend that you sing anything from "The Phantom of the Opera" either (especially Christine or Carlotta's parts). Why don't you try something else?
Nightwish

That's a fantastic song, but it's also very hard to sing if you don't really know how to sing.

I say practice the song once, a capella, all the way through, and see how your voice does. If it sounds great, then it's probably a good song to do. If it doesn't, maybe you're just not at that "belting" stage yet.
I'm Defying Gravity

ok so yea i am 14
i am a huge belter but also an insane soprano. when i told my voice coach that i wanted to try to sing defying gravity she though i was crazy but i had been practicing on my own and she was impressed. the notes are fine in my range, which is oversized for my age... i don't have a hard time singing it at all, believe it or not. i like what someone sugested to really make it my own. thanks for all your advice- i will take it to heart! Very Happy
Elphaba22

do you have the actual music (like it starts "I hope you're happy! I hope you're happy now..") or do you have the one from the vocal book?
I'm Defying Gravity

i have a karaoke track of the actual music from the show starting with "i hope you're happy..." but i cut it to the book version with a software on my computer. i turned out really well, actually!
Lepitot

They have a piano accompaniement CD, you know...that goes with the vocal selections book....
music is my life!!!

i'm 15 and i've had singing lessons since september 2007. i'm an alto/mezzo, and i could belt it all before i had singing lessons... make sure you warm up REALLY REALLY well! [/code]
music is my life!!!

PLUS if you struggle to sing it in Db major (how it is in the book) you could take it to a teacher and askthem to transpose it for you...
wicked_boy

O/T, I love vocal warm ups. Neutral

Rolling Eyes

lols so do i

*nodnod*
wicked_boy

*Goes around house singing "me - ma - mo" and humming up and down the scales.*
Elphaba22

My advice would be not to cut it, and to do the whole song/scene. If you need the sheet music for the whole thing, theres an email you can find in the front of the vocal selections book, and email and ask for the entire piece as it is in the show, and they email it to you.

Good luck!
happyguava

I would not suggest you sing it. Really, it can damage your voice (even if it sounds good or doesn't hurt at the moment) AND everyone's sick of it. There are soooo many amazing songs that are not completely overdone and stale and would be much easier on your voice.

I don't think you're "crazy". I just think that maybe you need to think this through a little.
I'm Defying Gravity

thanks for all the advice!

Why not do Popular? You could get a ton of laughs from it, and it's not excactly hard on the voice?

With DG, there's loads of ways to make it sound trashy and muck up, but Popular seems to be, more simple.
actor

The last note of Popular is higher than the last note of Defying Gravity and both are belted. Plus the phrasing needs to be perfect for it to be funny out of context.

It's not exactly easy to sing.
wicked_boy

Is it just me then, that find it less challenging?

Popular ends in a top C.
DG ends in a D flat.
According to my vocal slections. Neutral
actor

Sorry, my bad. The last note of Popular is a C. I thought it was a D. Still, it's a semitone away from DG.
But that's not the point. As I said before, the phrasing in Popular needs to be perfect. In Defying Gravity the phrasing is easy.
Nightwish

Are you doing this song as a duet?

I'm happy, I'm not much of a musician, but I actually got that one right! Smile

DG finishes on a belted and long Db
Popular finishes on a belted (for a sop, so it isn't high really...) c above middle c.
actor

Did you read the rest of the thread?
music is my life!!!

lol apparently not.... i was in a rush...

my bad

Embarassed
I'm Defying Gravity

no i'm not doing it as a duet. it's a really small school...
and i have to cut it because there is a 3 minute time limit. both of those reasons are why i'm not acting out the whole scene.
Elphaba22

Can you video yourself singing it so we can hear it? I could probably give you better advice that way
blackbird_fly

Repeating what several others have said, don't sing it if you're young-maybe you can belt it, but it could injure you in the long run. Maybe I'm Not That Girl?
Monsieur D'Arque

I can barely sing Defying Gravity myself...

Okay, I really shouldn't, being a guy and all, but it fits nicely into my repertoire and my voice, during the section where I sing a lot of power ballads and hard pop-rock.

Journey: "Dont' stop Believin'"
Styx: "Come Sail Away"
Wicked: "Defying Gravity"
Styx: "Come Sail Away Reprise"
Elphaba22

Yeah, I can barely sing it too, and I would definitely never be able to sing it at performance quality. My instinct tells me you shouldnt sing it, but if you are going to regardless, i'd like to see a video of you singing it, so I can offer any other advice I have.

I'm Defying Gravity

well i've kinda run out of time. the show is thursday, i will try to get someone to video, or make a video another time, i'm busy because i'm at my theatre every day. i've been working on it with my voice coach for over a year now, and it's not like i'm just "going for" the belts or anything. i'm doing it safely, no worries.
I'm Defying Gravity

just a update
the talent show was today
i won
it went amazing!!
thanks, everyone, for your help
Elphaba22

Sweet! Did anyone video it, I'd LOVE to see it
I'm Defying Gravity

no!! my mom tried but (haha) the camera was dead!!
so i'm gonna try to just make a video of me singing it sometime...
Smile
music is my life!!!

I'm Defying Gravity

Da_Dark_Dude
