take sloppy seconds?Auditioned for THE BEST professional company in my state. AMAZING theater. The f*cking Redgraves have graced this stage. Didn't even get a callback. Ah well.
However, one of the 3 folks who sat in on my audition called me and said even though I didn't get a callback for that company, she'd like to offer me a role in a show that she's directing a different theater.
This different theater is 50 miles from my home and unpaid. I can't tell if it's a good community theater or not. I think it's meh.
Here's my question: should I be in this show that is ridiculously far away, unpaid, and possibly "meh" just cuz someone from this fantastic theater is directing it? This someone is the education director for the fantastic theater, so I'm not even sure what casting authority she may have at the fantastic theater.

I'm asking some of my friends about the theater and the director tonight at WSS rehearsal.
The show and the role I don't care about. My goal is to get a role with one of the professional theaters out here - I'll be in whatever show I must/make whatever contacts I must to acheive that goal.

If this person was able to sit in at your audition at the awesome-o theatre, I think it's a valuable contact to get.

I agree with Laurel. And it's GREAT that she called you and asked if you would be interested in this other project! It should confirm that you are doing something right in the audition room, even though this isn't for the project you had hoped.
Often, making a good contact with someone through a lesser job works in your favor. If you do a great job on this show, even if it's crappy, this woman will get to know your work ethic and will be able to recommend you for the bigger stuff...
Though I would ask a few questions, like: Though this is unpaid, will I get reimbursed for travel or a small stipend, since I would have to go a bit out of my way? It doesn't hurt to at least ASK...Many theatres forget about that stuff, but gas is a HUGE expense...and they may actually consider it...

Gah. Just mapquested the distance to the theater and it's an hour away. An hour. It would cost me $10 in gas to get there and back. 5 rehearsals a week for 4 weeks, it would cost me $200 a month.
This community theater is just soooooooooooo meh. The music director is not great, not even good. And this lady is just the education director at the fabulous theater - so who knows if putting in time with her will pay off.
The director of the production of WSS that I'm in right now is the education director at a different but great professional theater. I'm putting in my time NOW at a theater in butt f*cking egypt to make her like me and recommend me for a role at her theater. Not sure if I wanna do this again, for a show I like less that is farther away, but to impress someone who works at an even BETTER theater...
decisions decisions!
PLUS- there are quite a few others professional shows going on at the same time I've auditioned for whose casting results have not been announced yet. What do I do about them?

how long is the rehearsel period? is carpooling a possibility? If its a really long rehearsel period, you shouldn't feel guilty starting off and testing whether the drive works for you - then you could admit the transportation issue jsut isn't possible any longer if the experience isn't worth your while.
If it's less than 1 month rehearsel, I wouldn't try to pull this stunt cuz you'll be leaving the theatre in the lurch to recast the role. And that would be a really bad thing to get back to the BIG theatre. which it would.

That's my situation with Urinetown.
It's just a regular youth theatre production, but it's being directed by a directing staff from Starlight in San Diego, which is very good. So basically, I'm doing a production that's far away and unpaid so I can get it in with the directors. I think it is working too! haha.
