TA 352 should die... but it's so fun... help. So, I'm taking a Musical Theatre class in college. I am a theatre major, but I'm in production, not performance. I'm taking the class because musicals are my life... makes sense, right?
I'm not afraid of the fact it's a performance-based class, as a lot of it is having 'pseudo-rehearsals' for a '30-minute show' at the end of the term.
What scares me is the fact that throughout the semester we'll be doing 'auditions', as well as a 'final audition' at the end of the semester. We have to come up with our own music and have to practice on our own. Scary stuff. Auditions are the thing that scared me away from doing performance initially, I think (and the fact that I prefer design/construction).
The director/instructor of the course does not care if:
-the songs are overdone
-the songs are written for/performed by the opposite gender
-we can even really sing
He does want:
-16 bars of music (appropriate for age)
-no more than one ballad
-a comedic monologue for the final audition that may or may not relate to the song sung
My problem is I have no idea what to choose. I've looked at websites that suggest pieces, but many of them I can't sing well, nor would I know which sixteen bars to take.
I'm a contra alto/alto. Oftentimes, when songs get over a B or so, I drop an octave when possible (IE, when the boys sing too). I can sing higher, if properly warmed up, and can belt for a 'reasonable' amount of time.
If anyone could give me suggestions of songs to sing for this class, as well as which 'section' of the song to sing or monologue to tell (I have 2 minutes for them together), I would greatly, GREATLY appreciate it. I don't mind an overused song, but I don't want to sing something, especially for my final audition, that many other people sing, you know? I have NO problem singing a song written for a male... and realistically might be able to sing one better.
Thank you, my hearts
