Hey!

Question for all those people who've played either Nickie or Helene in Sweet Charity. How did you play the character? Which was more fun? What kind of vocal range? I've just been cast as either Nickie or Helene but they haven't deceided who yet. Having difficulty finding any info on Sweet Charity (yes I have googled!) so would appreciate any comments.

Arrugh. It's been a long time since I did this show. As I recall, the two roles are pretty similar in stage time, vocal range, solos, sass, etc. Typically one is hispanic and one is black, but that's not a requirement. I really don't recall one being more 'anything' than the other. One wants to be a typist, one wants to be a hat check girl.

My daughter played Helene in her high school show a couple years ago. They weren't given any direction at all on the characters, so she decided to play Helene with a real hard edge.

Her part was all belt, I don't remember it going above an Eb.

Nickie has a few more lines, but they both have about the same amount of stage time. Nickie's solo in their first song is a little bigger, Helene's was smaller, but maybe more fun (about wanting to be the hat check girl). Their parts in the second song are pretty much the same.

I don't know who does the melody and who does the harmony, my daughter sang the harmony line because she was better at holding the harmony. So I think the parts in the song are reversible.

Apparently the director isn't very forthcoming with the old direction so I guess it will just have to be up to me and my friend how we portray the characters. Thanks guys.
