I found the costumes used in the movie to be intriguing. The time period was obviously meant to be Early Victorian, but Lucy's dresses always, to me, seemed as if they were supposed to be from an era much earlier than that (a good deal earlier than fifteen years - fashions didn't change that fast back then).

Do you think the error of including lace rouffled sleeves with a solid, corsetted bodice (made popular a century or so beforehand and definately going out of fashion by the time Victoria took the throne) was purposeful and meant to illustrate the supposed innocence of the character, or was it just a costuming fluff-up?

(Yeah, I dont really expect you to answer this. Dont worry.)

I was lucky enough to see a little behind the scenes documentary that interviewed the costumer.
She said she was inspired by clothing from throughout the 1800s (so not necessarily the decade that Sweeney takes place in) After that, she took a few liberties with the costumes and was able to pick and choose different historical designs that suited different characters.

Very Happy I really wasn't expecting anyone to know, but thanks! That does make a lot more sense to me now. (I've something of an interest in historical dress, as you can kinda tell.)

I think that it was a statement on Judge Turpin's conservative attitude, and fear of change. If he could keep her in the dress of a more modest, and demure than maybe she would always stay modest and demure.

Burton said that he wanted the costumes to not fit any exact period.
