SWEENEY TODD with Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton

I'm not particularly big on either, so perhaps this will be more exciting news for some of you than it is for me:

Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton are set to star in a new production of Sondheim's 1979 Broadway musical Sweeney Todd, that will open at Chichester Festival Theatre in the 2011 summer season, ahead of a projected West End transfer. The production has not been officially announced yet, but according to a report in London's Daily Mail, it is to be directed by Jonathan Kent.

Early days, I guess. Who knows what can happen in a year and a half?

Later days

Michael Ball I'm iffy on (if he's playing Sweeney-I think he'd be able to pull off Anthony, but he's probably too old) But I'd die to see Staunton play Lovett! I didn't even know she could sing! She'll be awsome, that's for sure...

Okay why Michael Ball????

That was sorta my question...I honestly cannot see him as Sweeney is any way, shape or form.

This is so strange.

A few months ago there was a random entry on wikipedia saying Michael Ball will star in the "London revival". No Source or anything. I'm very surprised it has actually turned out to be true...and they've announced it so early. Does '2011 summer season' literally mean in 2011?

EXACTLY! He is beyond wrong for the role. He can never bring any darkness the role needs.

I mean when I think of Sweeney Todd, Michael Ball immediately comes to mind... Sad

Not so psyched on Ball, but Staunton I have high expectations for.

Broadway transfer with Bernadette!PLEASE.

Then she can win a 3rd Tony, one-up Patti for her nomination and make it 'even' since Patti won for Gypsy.

Michael's voice has shifted lower since he was marius and also he showed some real menace through Count Fosco in Woman in White. I actually think he's gonna be good.

Well, I love Michael Ball in anything he does, but I agree; this does seem to be like a bit of a miscasting. But who knows? Maybe he'll surprise us all. I certainly hope so.

Imelda Staunton as Mrs. Lovett seems like a really good casting to me, though. I seriously can't wait 'til that happens. Very Happy
