Sweeney Todd - Frustrating review.

Of the movie.

Now, I don't mind when people criticize the Movie as a whole, or the performances of Johnny Depp/HBC etc.., but then eventually some go down to the music itself, here is a frustrating example:

Quote:
I enjoy all types of music, as long as there is a good tune and harmony, or at least something interesting happening with it. The music in this reminded me of what I could produce in 5 minutes if someone told me to think of some tunes for a musical. There is nothing here that will be sung at any point in the future - nothing that brings goosebumps to your skin with its musical ingenuity or complexity.

It's just so...strange.

Well... I can see where some of those are coming from.
I just don't think that it's really fair to judge the stage version by the film. But as far as that goes these reviews aren't completely butchering the stage show, most are honest enough to say that the stage show could be different and such.

If they were talking about the stage production, I think I'd be scratching my head too.

Okay, don't skewer me, but as much as I adore Sweeney Todd, I can sort of see why one might think the music wasn't impressive just from the film alone if they weren't familiar with anything else by Sondheim. I felt that in the film, the music was stripped down to the point of sounding like generic movie music. Bonham Carter and Depp's voices didn't do anything for the music, IMHO. I just thought that the music in general didn't do anything for the film. The Sweeney Todd movie worked well as a film in its own right, but not really as a musical. The score just wasn't well-represented enough.

Just my 0.02.

I've only seen the movie once, but I got the impression that a lot of the cuts to the score - while useful in keeping the plot moving - meant that quite a few sections of music which are repeated within songs in the stage show, were only heard once in the movie. Without a bit of repitition within them, songs can sound at first listen (to me) like they just wander all over the place, rather than being properly crafted. So I can see where people are coming from in criticising the songs as presented in the movie.

At least the movie was better then the production I'm in...
