Sweeney Todd film scriptThe script is very faithful to the stage version.There is a new death for Fogg. I'll just put it at that and you can see for yourself when you read it. A verse has been changed in 'Poor Thing'. Epiphany has survived cutting completely intact. |
||||||||||||
| Sweeney Hyde |
Tell us right now what songs have been cut!
| ErikProuvaire |
'Ah, Miss' and 'Kiss Me' are cut. About half of 'Green Finch' is cut. 'Parlor Songs' is completely cut, but that's not too surprising. 'The Wigmaker Sequence' and 'The Letter' are gone. The Judge's ' Johanna' is cut, too. Most of everything else intact, however. The 'oriental disease' verse is cut from 'Pirelli's Miracle Elixir'. The Contest lacks the tooth-pulling bit, but the '82 Touring Production and the Revival cut that too. Four or five lines of dialogue are cut from 'Priest' and the chair part is cut from 'God, That's Good'. The 'City on Fire' part of the final sequence is cut. The 'two quid was in it' verse is cut from 'Not While I'm Around'.
Interestingly enough, there's a new verse in 'Poor Thing' that goes like this: There was this Judge, you see Wanted her like mad Every day he'd send her a flower But did she come down from her tower? Sat up there and sobbed by the hour Poor fool... Overall, this script is pretty faithful to the stage version. Fogg's death is changed a bit. Instead of being shot by Johanna, Anthony leaves him locked in a cell with the inmates, who begin to advance on him as if to tear him limb from limb. |
||||||||||||
| Sweeney Hyde |
Ah, Miss and Kiss Me being cut upsets me...Green Finch=oh well life goes on. Wigmaker and letter aren't too bad. Judge's Johanna...that's terrible. City on Fire should definately be in it too.
| Patrick |
What did those bastards cut from A Little Priest?
| Salome |
is ladies in their sensitivities in the script?
| ErikProuvaire |
'Ladies' is still completely intact.
| ErikProuvaire |
'Priest' cuts the following lines:
"And good for business, too. Trouble is, we only get it on Sundays.", The entire rhyming segment through "down well with beer" and then goes straight from "Those down below" to "Marine". |
||||||||||||
| Sweeney Hyde |
I feel that A Little Priest, above all of the other songs, should not have been touched.

I said it before in another thread, but I'll say it again here. Cutting out the Ballads is just terrible.
Yes, I know it's still in the score. That's not the point. Yes, maybe they felt it didn't fit in a film format. That's not the point either. This says to me, Burton doesn't understand the show, and is more interested in making the movie he wants to make, than making a great movie version of a wonderful musical. When I heard they were making a movie, I thought it would be a movie version of the musical. Now I realize it's a movie loosely based on the musical. Perhaps VERY loosely. |
||||||||||||
| mastachen |
^Actually, the script is very faithful to the musical. The dialogue in the show and the movie is very similar, save the cuts. So whatever was left in the movie was pretty much taken from the musical.
And the script did have the ballads. The only reason they weren't filmed was Johnny Depp's daughter got ill and it pushed the schedule tight. Thus, they had to cut the ballads. In my opinion, that may be the only thing in the script that could be cut without ruining the flow of the movie. |

I'm still fuming about these cuts.
| Mistress |
I am also pissed by the cutting of the ballads...but I guess it's not too bad because they did mean to put them in...I'm also pissed about the cutting of City on Fire...but as everyone here still seems hopeful about the story being intact I'll wait and see...As long as they didn't take an axe to the story like they did to POTO, it should still be fine. |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
city on fire is in the finale. its not cut.
| actor |
This cut is almost as bad as the cutting of Mea Culpa. I'm beginning to get over the cutting of Kiss Me and Ah Miss but I will never get over those two. |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
hmm..do we know for a fact? or are you basing it on this "script".
| Vertigo50 |
Here's the issue.
If you're making a movie you created yourself, like Sleepy Hollow, and time gets tight because Johnny Depp's daughter gets sick, it's up to you how you proceed. If you're making a long-awaited film version of one of the greatest musicals ever written, and you get delayed, you delay the release until you can do it right. I know there are issues with the studios and all that other stuff, but a director who really understood the show and the fanbase and what he is really undertaking would recognize that this is probably the one shot at making this movie and making it right, and he would fight for it. Nothing I have seen has given me the impression that Tim Burton understands any of that. I really wish Sam Mendes had finished making this movie years ago, and we wouldn't have all these problems now. |
||||||||||||
| mastachen |
I'm pretty sure the main issue resided in budget. When money is tight, it doesn't matter if Sam Mendes or Tim Burton directs it, it'll have to force them to make certain decisions. It's probably something behind Burton's control, so it'd be unfair to get mad at him.
I just think it's pointless to trash the movie before it comes out just because it doesn't have songs that you like. And if you think the script is bad now, wait til it gets through the editing room. Where do you think deleted scenes come from? lol |

It's a bit unfair to criticize it before it's even released, but isn't that what the internet is for? In all seriousness, though, it's really just my expectation of what this film COULD have been, or even SHOULD have been in my own view that disappoints me. It's probably not fair to judge it based on my expectation, but I will anyway. |

This version of the script doesn't have 'City on Fire'. It goes straight from the detah of Fogg to the scenes leading into the Beadle's death. |

I don't care about the ballads...But if City on Fire really ends up cut I will be PISSED.
| Jekkienumber24601 |
I don't care about city on fire. It's useless to the story. I do like the ballads and even like how they are presented in the script. too bad instead of cutting them from the final film they decided to not even shoot them, so now we'll never see how they are.
| pish123c |
How is City on Fire useless?
It's very atmospheric and gets the point across that all hell has broken loose while Johanna and Anthony make their escape. It makes the audience feel on edge which is good for the final scenes. If anything I think that the ballads are useless. They'd be great instrumental pieces for the opening credits/scene transitions, though. |

Tim Burton obviously understands the fanbase--because he understands that musical theater fans do not make up a majority of the target audience, and maybe a generous 25% of the people who go to see this movie will have even heard of Sweeney Todd, let alone know it well enough to be upset that the ballads are cut. In terms of both size and who's the most vocal, the musical theater people are probably ranked fourth behind horror fans, Burton fans, and Depp fans. Obviously this is Burton and he has more concern for artistic integrity than pleasing as many people as he can, but the fact remains that this is Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd and he has bigger concerns than preserving every single note of the stage show. Concerns like pulling off the transition from stage to screen, and wrapping on time. If you want a faithful replication of the stage show, there's already a DVD out there. This is Burton's vision of the story, and since Burton isn't a total hack, I'm going to assume that he won't butcher it. The ballads are awesome and it sounds like he had a good idea of how to use them (using ghosts as narrators, etc), but he was pressed for time and had to cut them. Would you rather he'd cut "The Worst Pies in London" or "Not While I'm Around" instead? |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
I wish he HAD cut "Not While I'm Around"!!
| postmodern-mango-salsa |
Honestly, that's one of my favorite songs in the whole musical! |
||||||||||||
| Jekkienumber24601 |
Kiss me is great. Not while I'm around is better. Seriously, how can you wish Not while I'm around was cut? |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
because it slows the plot..and its the only sondheim song i really dislike greatly.
| Pannic |
I personally think that "Not While I'm Around" is one of my favorite songs in all musical theatre. It's the song that makes me wish I could play Toby.
| Jekkienumber24601 |
it's most beautiful song in the show. and believe me in a show were no song is beautiful it's a welcome entry. |
||||||||||||
| Patrick |
I'm actually okay with not having the ballads, they work on stage but really wouldn't on film.
And I agree with Salome. Not While I'm Around and City on Fire don't help the plot. I hate how much I've agree with her recently. |
||||||||||||
| mozurkz |
The cut of the ballad is the biggest blow. I don't care about the beginning, but the ending one conveys the entire point of the play. The entire show makes you feel compassion for sweeney, and the point is that we all have a bit of 'sweeney' in us, and even though he was wronged, he was still evil. The final ballad makes the show into a commentary of the nature of evil, instead of just a good opera.
| Kaiana |
If I was Johanna I'd be pissed. I've always thought of her shooting Fogg as a really climactic moment for her.
| pish123c |
I love Not While I'm Around as a song...And Toby is a dream role...But I agree with Salome. It DOES slow the show down. When I first saw it I was shifting in my seat, wondering when the number would be over so that the action would start back up again.
Does it give more depth to Toby? Yes. Could that depth have been shown in other ways? Yes. |
||||||||||||
| Jekkienumber24601 |
Wait slows the show down. and sorry any song or scene that shifts the action away from Sweeney and Lovett slows it down. Including Green Finch, Johanna (though I love it so) Ladies in their sensitivites, kiss me, Mea Culpa. When I watch the show I always want to get back to Sweeney and Lovett. |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
wow jekkie i'm starting to hate your opinions of theatre.
th judge and beadle ARE part oft he action. and they are much more interesting characters than a slightly dim boy like toby. |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
Barber and His Wife, Wait and Todd's Johanna are VERY beautiful..and much better osngs than Not WHile I'm Around. |
||||||||||||
| pish123c |
Not true. Not While I'm Around was just put at an inconvenient spot in the show...It's right when the audience is craving more and more action, not some slow little song about Toby's devotion to Mrs. Lovett. I love the character, (Like I said, it's a dream role), but his song really just is an inconvenience being placed where it is. |
||||||||||||
| Jekkienumber24601 |
Toby is an amazing character. for all we know he might be the person continuing the legacy of sweeney, by murderously killing people himself. If I had to pick which part would be funner to play as an actor out of Toby and Anthony I'd pick Toby any day. |

perhaps for some..but come on Todd,Turpin,Pierelli and Beadle are all brillaintly written and more fun to play than boring little toby. even anthony if played correctly is more fun and has much better musical material. |
||||||||||||
| mozurkz |
I agree for once with Salome. While I don't mind 'Not while I'm around', during the show I seriously wanted it to be over. I do think that Toby has a good part though. |
||||||||||||
| tobiasragg |
After playing and rehearsing toby for the past 3 months, I must say that it is an amazing role to play. He can have an amazing depth, and I personally love the placement of NWIA in the musical. Yes, its in the middle of the action, but it has its own dark tone to it. It all depends on how you stage it.
Sondheim had a purpose in putting that song there, and if done right it can add a whole nother level of depth and darkness to the show. It doesn't need to be some lovey dovey number to break the flow. Isn't it sad that america has gotten to the point where everything is more action, more excitement and faster? I mean, come on. Sit back and enjoy things how they are. I refer anyone who disagrees to listen to the song "Wait" |

If you're going to go around mocking people's English, at least get it right. "Murderously" would be an adverb, not an adjective. And Toby needs no depth, he's either a little kid or mentally challenged. Not to imply that he would have no problems or feelings, but we don't need to know them. |
||||||||||||
| Pannic |
"Death of Innocence" is a major theme in the show. Cutting NWIA would seriously damper that.
| what_the_heck013 |
Hey... atleast there IS a sweeney movie, yeah? Don't complain.
| Jekkienumber24601 |

I am furious that they took out the ballad, they could've done it without Johnny Depp. Christopher Lee was cast to be one of the ballad ghost. I do wish they put back Kiss me. it wasn't my favorite song but I like certain parts of it. The other cuts like Johanna by the judge, ah miss, and green finch and linnet bird I don't mind at all.
At least I'm hoping that Tim Burton secretly did film the Ballad and it will show up in the movie or at least the dvd. |
||||||||||||
| Salome |
a) the Judges Johanna is one of the shows finest numbers.
b) Burton did not seceretly film the Ballad. Lee stated he was cut before any script was even given to him. |
||||||||||||
| Pannic |
The only reason I could see for cutting Mea Culpa would be problems with Rickman being able to sing it (that song essentially asks a bass to sustain a high F).

tim burton has been a huge fan of sweeney for years and has tried to bring it to the screen numerous times. he loves the show, and he's talented, so HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. he's a proffessional, so let's try and trust him.
and btw, salome, i'm in love with you. you crack me up. |

Its rated R. Do you guys have a different rating system? |
