Susan Boyle does "Memory"

No Surprise on this one....but Susan Boyle, the amazingly talented 47 year old unemployed charity worker in Scotland whose name is now known throughout the world, has made her appearance in the semi-finals on Britain's Got Talent.

Though it may not be much of a surprise to people in this forum, she sang "Memory".

I for one thought her second performance was outstanding, even though she started a little shaky, she really cranked it out.

WAY TO GO Susan! ^^

I personally thought it was horrible, I can't stand her. I hope this performance will bring some people back down to earth..
And All That Jazz

I really didn't like the way the lighting was. It was like she had a little halo or something. Overdone IMO.

As for her singing, all I can say is that she sounded Susan Boyle-ish.

Very wrong for the song. Needs a natural belting alto (who knows the song is sung by a broken down old whore, I might add).

Eh it was ok. But it was shaky in places. And I think she's a little overrated. Yeah she can sing but so can a lot of others who have taken part in various competitions. There was a male singer a couple of weeks after her who, IMO, is better than her. Also untrained, also singing musical songs. From Wales, I think. And noone's raving about him or making him fansites. <.<

Yes, she was shaky at first , but from 3:43 she had them. There's no way she won't win with the media express pushing her, and I'm not so sure that's so bad. She's not about to replace anyone on the West End or Broadway. All she wants to do is sing for the queen. Let's let her.
Mistress

I gotta agree with Robin. It's started out a wee bit painful at the beginning, but as soon as she started belting she had it in her pocket.
I say, good for her for making it this far and I hope accomplishes what she came here to accomplish.

The beginning was a little off ... but she's just such an inspiration. I love the story behind her, too.

I'm playing Grizabella right now and it struck me how appropriate memory would be for Susan Boyle- good vocal range, relatable, inherently British, really well-known, etc.

I agree with the shaky beginning, annoying lighting, but I must say, she modifies her vowels like a pro, and she does have a really strong mezzo. I want her to go to a really good voice teacher and get her vibrato straightened out, and maybe outlast her 15 minutes of fame.

The beginning bit where she said "that I can be accepted. I'm not the worthless person that people think I am". That really bothered me that she feels that she has to work against that but I guess her first appearance bore out the truth of that.

Ok, now, honest opinion, I don't think she "nailed" Memory but she did a credible job with it. I Dreamed a Dream fit her voice better. She claimed otherwise but I think nerves affected her in the beginning but she seemed to quickly settle into the song. And her pacing of the lyrics seemed a bit awkward at times. Maybe there is a time constraint but I wish they hadn't removed a section of the song which would have led nicely into song's climax. She does seem to be belter although I'm not sure she knows how to do it properly or at least to the best of her ability. And lastly, like many musical songs, it works best if the singer emotes and Boyle was just singing the song.

But for an "amateur"...well done Miss Boyle. Very Happy

actually, she has had vocal lessons - it was just a long time ago.

I think part of it is time, but I think it may have also been done because she can't get low enough since "Burnt out ends..." is the lowest part of the song.

Yeah, he comes from Pengam, about a half hour from where I live. I personally think that (in the auditions) he wasn't that great, Susan Boyle was better. He laid on this really thick sob story, saying 'Oh, I'm so nervous, blah blah blah,' and then cranking out an 'okay' performance of Bring Me Home. Susan Boyle was miles ahead with 'I Dreamed a Dream' - she just walked onstage, grinning, and saying that she wanted to be as successful as Elaine Paige, and then stunned everyone with her voice.

However, on the semi-final night, when she sang Memory, she hit a bum note at the beginning, and that, combined with nerves, probably shook her up for the first portion of the song. However, when she belted, she was fine. I didn't think that the song was right for her though - but I also didn't like the Welsh guy's performance. It wasn't as good as some of the other talent they have on there (although why they put through that guy who swung dustbins from his ears instead of that awesome little drumming boy is beyond me).

But Susan got through to the final. What she does now, and if she wins, only time will tell. Toxic and I were having a conversation about her on the CCDB - perhaps she should sing 'I Know Him So Well' or something along those lines. It has to be something from musical theatre, because she's already proven herself with 'IDaD.' *shrugs*

at least she didn't win Razz glad diversity won, but she took it with a pinch of salt and has had her taste of fame. She was okay, but really overrated. i mean, the first line or so was dreadful! Sad
