Sunday In The Park With GeorgeI believe this is Sondheim's second best. It's hard to wrap your mind around it at first (it IS about a painting, after all), but it just absolutely is a great musical. I don't wanna say that it's the *most* pioneering musical, but a lot of it depends on the staging, IMHO. I mean, you couldn't achieve the ending properly on, say, an arena stage. Comments?

If you were to post this in the Sondheim part of the forum, I'm sure you'd get plenty of responses.

Sorry; I hadn't thought of that . Is there some way you could move it to Simply Sondheim? Just let me know when you do.

Unfortunately, I don't have mod powers on this part of the board. I'm sure you'll be forgiven if you cut & paste and make a new thread in the Sondheim section of the board.

Sounds like the scene from The Wizard of Oz when Glinda tells the Wicked Witch of the West. "You have no powers here!"

Meh... It was alright. Not as good as some of Sondheim's other stuff, I thought... Into the Woods, Assassins.

It is certainly not one of my favorites. I do enjoy the music though. As far as how it ranks on my Sondheim favorites, it is probably fourth or fifth...I personally think all of Sondhiem's shows deserve a board, with the exception of Staurday night and the revue shows.

Concerning Saturday Night, you can compare that show to Joseph or Pippin with timing in mind. Sondheim was incredibly fresh-faced at the time and hadn't worked with Hammerstein yet. The score is still worlds beyond Joseph or Pippin.

Concerning "Assassins", you only get an appreciation from it if you've either seen it or been in it.

I think SITPWG is one of Sondheim's best. A very moving show.
I probably like it more than ITW.

Me too. Or rather, I can't decide which is best, Sweeney Todd or Sunday. ST is so completely perfect down to the smallest detail. Sunday might be cranky now and then, but tries to do so much more. Most of it is intensely beautiful.

For me Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd are his best. SITPWG I've seen only once and probably have to see it a few times to get it. I'm sort of on the fence about it being good or not. The first act made me think often "Oh, get on with it!" The second act is better. I saw a college production of Assassins and it was...eh...fair. Passion was good but a bit heavy, slow, and tedious.

But Saturday Night is still better than Pippin.

I love SITPWG the music is so beautiful and lyrical. I think it was really inovative when it came out on broadway. I find it sad that it didn't appeal more to the masses. It has achieved its own kind cult following. I wonder what would happen if they revived it?

it won the pulitzer when it came out.
and the lndon revival this year did quite well..not to menion it was one of the best recieved of the sondheim shows at the Kenney center 4 years ago with Melissa Errico.

Peters doesnt get enough credit for her work in the show. Very hard role to play.

Extremely hard. If I was female, my dream roles would be Dot and Rose (my fav betrayels of those roles are those of Bernadette's (Salome officially hates me now ))Bernadette is my favourite actress simply because she can act better than she sings, I love her singing, but her acting skills are PERFECT!

Bernadette was the truest form of the actual Rose that the stage ever saw. She had some health problems during late previews into opening and the critics pounced and she never recovered. Those of us who also saw her late into her run were astounded at how good she was.

exactly, that's why I love her. She dosn't try to gloss things over in her performance, and she puts her heart and soul into it.

Simple really. I appreciate and love Assassins. Never seen it. Never been in it. Hence my disagreement.

You don't need to see or be in "Assassins" to like it. That is a retarded thing to say. Sondheim would be appalled!

I'm sorry that you don't agree with my opinion, but that hardly makes me retarded. And unless Sondheim regularly visits this forum (which I'm quite sure he doesn't), I'm choosing not to worry about what he thinks of one person's opinion.

You can't hide behind the "it's my opinion" line on this one. Your statement makes no sense. Why would you need to be in the show to like it?

Sweeney Hyde

I agree with Ciaron and louison...I have never had the opportunity to see Assassins...but I have the script and the OCR and love it.

| The REAL Ciaron wrote: | | Why would you need to be in the show to like it? |
What I meant by that statement is that many people base their
appreciation of ASSASSINS on the cast recordings, and that gives an odd
perspective. The recordings by themselves make the show seem more
dangerous than it actually is. When you listen to the recording, you get the sense of a show that is edgy and challenges the "American Dream." When you actually see it or do it, you realize that it's surprisingly audience-friendly and easy to swallow. Which is why most reviews tend to say "Despite the subject matter, this show is really fun!"
I hope this explains my opinion a little better, but if you wanna be a jerk and not accept that this is my opinion (by the way, you have no right to dictate to me what I can and can't say) then that's on you.

Where are you getting this from. The show, in it's two legit productions, was purposly "lighthearted" but like most Sondheim experiences when you look deeper the show is an incredibly dark look at the martyrdom of the "dead presidents".
Another fine example is Hal Princes original staging of "A Little Priest". The audience loves the song. They laugh and have the urge to waltz but upon closer inspection find themselves revolted!
