Suggestions For My Repertoire Book

Hello everybody! I need some questions answered and I know you guys can help. I want to work on some songs this summer. I was wondering if you have any suggestions.

Information To Take Into Consideration
I am 13 years old, which rules out some songs. I can comfortably sing from a F below middle C to a G one octave above middle C which I think puts me in a low soprano or mezzo range. Can anyone clarify this?

Songs I Have Worked On
1. I Enjoy Being A Girl (Flower Drum Song)
2. You'll Never Walk Alone (Carousel)
3. Almost Like Being In Love (Brigadoon)
4. Far From The Home I Love (Fiddler On the Roof)
5. Let Me Entertain You (Gypsy)
6. If Momma Was Married (Gypsy)
7. In My Own Little Corner (Cinderella)
8. A Most Unusual Day (not sure what this is from)
9. I'll Know (Guys And Dolls?)

Thanks.

Ellen

almost all of your songs are in the "overdone" category.

try "Little Lamb" from Gypsy. It is so age specific, only females from 12 - 15 can get away w/ it.

look at several songs from Carnival - Beautiful Candy, Yes My Heart, You're a Very Nice Man - all uptempo

stay away from Mira or Love Make the World . . . = overdone

avoid love songs. Adults cringe hearing 13 yr olds sing about lovers and ex-husbands.

I know they aren't appropiate. The title of my thread probably should have been "Starting A Repertoire Book". I was just putting down songs I worked on in voice class so you could tell my range.

My first song in my repertoire book ~ Little Lamb. I have the sheet music because I am in Gypsy now. I'm Dainty June.

Which do you think I am: a mezzo-soprano or a low soprano. I am trying to figure this out because some sources say I am a soprano and others say I am a mezzo.

More suggestions are very welcome. Come one, come all!

Would "Beautiful City" from Godspell Jr. be a good piece to add to my repertoire book or is it overdone or not appropriate?

I don't know that song - but Godspell songs couldn't be called inappropriate.

You can hear the song on the Broadway Jr website www.broadwayjr.com/default_HOME.asp. Click on Godspell and it will have a recording of the whole song which you can click on.
By inappropriate I meant too spiritual. I really like the song though and I sing it very well.

Hi everybody. This is !The World's My Stage! with a new username. Please suggest some songs. I would really like to work on songs and need some more suggestions.
How does everyone feel about "Beautiful City"? Is it too spiritual? Or is it a good decision?
Am I a mezzo or a soprano? I can comfortably sing from a F below middle C to a G one octave above middle C.

Ellen
Bianca.

I love beautiful city.

But it's such a repetitive, simple little melody that it might not be best to show yourself off in an audition.

some MezzoishSoprano songs I've come to love:

Stranger to the Rain from Children of Eden

Easy to say from Zombie Prom (a very new musical.. can't be used for all auditions..)

and

My new Philosophy from You're a good man charlie brown ( very upbeat and exciting.. needs alot of energy to be a wow. Borderline overdone in Broadway auditions, but for community theater should be fine.)

Based upon the range you have given I would say you are most likely a mezzo soprano, as you would really need the C two octaves above middle C at least to call yourself a soprano, based on many voice classifications.

I agree with the suggestion to sing New Philsophy as it is good for your age as well. If I think of suggestions, I'll pass them along...its so hard to pick songs for your age range that aren't overdone. For example I don't mind hearing younger teens sing Goodnight My Someone, as it has such a sweetness to it, however its somewhat overdone and not very rangey.

not true, there are plenty of soprano roles that never go above a G

it's all in the tone quality of your voice and since you're so young I'd probably say that you're a soprano but when auditioning just write down your note to note range (only the notes that are comfortable and you can sing for a while......like I can warm down to a E below middle C but I cant comfortably sing it for a long period of time)

look for age- app. songs.........hearing a really young person go into an audition and sing something like "Gooch's Song" or "Another suitcase another hall" is not what they want to hear....I've always said that if you can convincingly play the role then dont sing the rep.

I just saw this topic and it's probably late but I just want to say that though I'm 16, I'm a mezzo soprano and I have plenty of songs that I worked on when I was 13. If you still need or want them, I'll post them.
mtgirl118

Thanks bwaybrunette21! I would love to have them. You can post them here or PM them to me. Thanks!

Yes it is based on tone quality and where your voice is strongest. I'm a voice therapist and I was a performance major in college. However range is also a consideration for voice classification. And what true soprano roles do you know of that don't go higher then a G? Because I can name at least 50 if I really tried that all go much higher then G.

You'll also note I said based on her range that she's given. I don't know sh*t about her actual voice, I was making an off hand estimate based on her range alone.

The songs I worked on from when I was maybe 12 to 14 include...

Johnny One Note - Babes In Arms
Home - The Wiz
Lullaby of Broadway - 42nd Street
Shy - OUAM
For Good - Wicked Elphaba
Sound of Music - Sound of Music
Maybe This Time - Cabaret
Amayzing Mayzie - Seussical
Defying Gravity - Wicked
Before the Parade Passes By - Hello, Dolly
Hello, Young Lovers - The King & I
Good Morning Baltimore - Hairspray
Somewhere - West Side Story
If I Were a Bell - Guys and Dolls
My Strongest Suit - Aida
In My Own Little Corner - Cinderella
I Enjoy Being a Girl - Flower Drum Song

And ... ummmm maybe more I can't really remember.

"Broadway Baby" from Follies is cute too, I'm working on it now but it can definitely be sung by a 13 year old.

Some of those might be a little overdone(Wicked etc) or age inappropriate, ex: Maybe This Time but other then that those are fairly good suggestions.

I was also thinking of shows I've done in the past and possibly some of Kim Macafee's songs from Bye Bye Birdie could work. Though they may go to high A if you sing in the original key. But at least they are age appropriate and not vocally stressing.
OneSongGlory

I would be very hesitant - regardless of age or timbre - to call anyone who can't go comfortably over a G a soprano.
mtgirl118

Thank you so much for the song suggestions. I am also planning on buying that book. I have written mezzo soprano on my audition forms. I like it better anyway. Very Happy
