That is a GREAT question!
Usually, what I try to have in my book are the following:
Belt/Legit Classic Musical Theatre Uptempo (R&H/L&L/Loesser/etc.)
Belt/Legit Classic Musical Theatre Ballad (See composers above)
Contemporary Musical Theatre Ballad (Frank Wildhorn, ALW, Flahrety and Ahrens, etc.-but NOT Guettel, Lippa, JRB, Sondheim because it is WAY HARD for pianists to read)
Contemporary Musical Theatre Uptempo (See above)
A Comedy Song (which could be from any of these categories)
A Disney Song
Country Song
Pop Song
Rock Song
A Patter Song
A 40's Song (Swing, War Songs, Etc.)
A Song from Each of these composers:
A Cole Porter Song
A Gershwin Song
A Sondheim Song (Only to be used either when auditioning or a Sondheim show or at the request of the producers)
An Art Song/Operetta Song
An Opera Song in a different language
I'm sure I forgot something, but that's generally what I have in my book...

That was an awesome list, jazzy. Question: Dou you think one would need a seperate patter, operetta, and Gilbert and Sullivan song. I'm currently trying to learn "I Am The Very Model". Could I use this for all three types of auditions?
Also, I can not stress more how helpful it is to buy The Singer's Musical Theatre Athology books for your voice range. I bought the first volume for bass/baritone (I plan to get volume 2 as well as tenor vol. 1). It has helped to increase my repertoire so much. The only weakness of these books (or atleast the one I have) is that they don't provide enough contemporary songs.

How strange- I definitely logged on just to make a topic asking the very same question!!
Thanks for the insight, Jazzy.

No problem!
I was just looking at what I had in my book...(Knowing what I NEEDED in my book! LOL!)
And you don't always use everything in your book all the time. You will find that there are one or two songs that you use the most and you only use the rest when the casting team is more specific about what they want to see.
Also, I realized I didn't really give examples of what a "Patter" song is...
Think "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" from Pirates of Penzance or "There Once Was a Man" from Pajama Game or even "Show Me" from MFL...
And I forgot to add that you need a Disney song (I'll add it up top)...anymore, it's become so dominant on Broadway and they have a TON of auditions for stuff. I feel like they are starting to dominate the entire industry. It makes my soul hurt! LOL!

This might be a dumb question, but in regards to pop and country songs; do you mean pop pop and pop country or pop-style/country-style showtunes?

Generally, I would say the sound they are looking for when you are doing a "pop" song is one that comes from a 70's kind of pop song...Though, at times, you are asked to sing stuff with real chops like Celine Dion or Whitney songs, but not very often! LOL! (THANK GOD!-I SUCK AT THOSE!)
As for country songs, I would say definitely less of a cross-over sound and something more earthy...like a few classic country songs...though songs with a country feel from musical theatre also work...

Thanks Jazzy- this is very helpful. I kinda suspected what you're saying, so I think I'm on the right track. I have sooo many more contemporary/current pop songs in my repetoire (from singing in pop cover bands) that it was becoming difficult to pick the strongest ones to continue polishing, so it will be easier to start fresh and focus on something different; plus the tunes from the 70's seem to posess more range I think.
