SugarCan anyone tell me anything about the musical Sugar? My daughter's school is doing it this spring. |

SugarSugar is a musical adaptation of the classic Billy Wilder film, Some Like It Hot (starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon). The score is written by Bob "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?" Merrill. Two recordings of the score are available: the Original Broadway Cast Recording and the revised and retitled (after the film) London Version of the show. Later days David |

Actually, Bob Merrill just wrote the lyrics. The score is by the brilliant Jule Styne who also wrote the music for "Gypsy," "High Button Shoes," and "Funny Girl" (with lyrics also by Bob Merrill) as well as countless other song standards.
Very funny show. I saw it around 1974 when it toured in LA with Robert Morse and Larry Kert. |

Styne
That is true - I had forgotten that Styne had written the score. I think I was so caught up in passing on the "How Much is That Doggie" trivia! I think it probably doesn't represent Styne's best work - it's certainly not on par with either Gypsy or Funny Girl - but is is pleasant enough, with one or two really good numbers. an interesting show to be in, i must say
one day in the train, *Sun on my Face* -song (we had to peek our heads out of the beds, and my wig got caught on the curtains, and almost fell out ontu the stage) that was the audiences least favorite song--it was the song they all looked at their programs |

Can anyone tell me anymore about the female parts? | ||
| JeffF |
Sugar Kane is the main female role. Played by Marilyn Monroe in the film "Some LIke it Hot", it's usually played by a similar type (sexy and appealing, but naive and innocent).
There is also an all girl band, so many girls are needed. Sugar is the only lead female role. Rent the film of "Some Like it Hot". Peter Stone's book for the musical is fairly faithful to the film and will give you a pretty good idea. |

Okay, anyone have any suggestions for a good audition song for Sugar?
the director asked for songs from 30's or 40's musicals. Its for a 15-year-old belter, and its a high school show. thanks for any suggestions. |

I love this show. Very funny, great story and some classic one liners. I'm playing Osgood Feilding in a local production and I love it. BTW, Sweet Sue is kinda a lead.

Oh Sugar....my very first show ever. It's abosolutely funny. No, it's more than funny. I saw it during pratice a million times yet I still needed a bathroom everytime I saw the guys in a dress. Yes, the guys shaved themselves and wore a dress and spoke in a high voice. Not all shows have the guys play as Daphne and Josephine though. Some have girls play D+J.
Tell your daughter Good Luck! |
