Successful Audition SongsI don't see any thread where people can list what songs they got a part for. In this thread, list what you were auditioning for, what your vocal range is, and what song you sang. Here's mine:
I auditioned for Bergen Academies-Performing Arts. I am a Soprano/Mezzo (I can easily go from a F below middle C to a E above middle C) and I sang Once Upon a Dream from Jekyll and Hyde

Just a note....specific songs don't "promise" or guarantee that you will get cast in a part/show. Song choice is an important part of your audition but many other factors like your look, whether you can actually hit the notes, your suitability, your personality, your other skills, your experience, the panel's mood, etc etc. play an equally large part.
I am sure this thread will be a fun way of exchanging information but please note that just because you got a part by singing "Once upon a dream", this song may be totally unsuitable for the next person or another show....or even another panel. In the UK for example, many panels are not fans of hearing Jekyll and Hyde because it is so overdone and you might therefore leave an unfavourable reminder even though you could be brilliantly talented. It's all very subjective...and there are never any guarantees.

oh, I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear. I was just saying that there is no thread to "gloat", for lack of a better word, on what worked for you. These songs may or may not work for other people, but it can be interesting to see if anyone got a part using the same song you used, or if some one got the same part you did using a very different song.

I get called back for Mrs Potts every time I use "My Cup Runneth Over". then at the callback of course you sing "Beauty & the Beast". 2 very low alto songs. Then I was cast as the coloratura Wardrobe. go figger.
I was cast as Rafaela in Grand Hotel using "I Love Paris".
Honestly I must confess that usually I've been cast from walking in and singing from the show. There's supposed to be some weird rule against it, but that's what you'll be doing at the callback anyway.

I know alot of people well keep certain success songs to themselves. Mainly because, when you find a gem you want to keep it hidden. I dont mind sharing since I dont know many people, from this site, that live in the great north.
Anyway I have had great success with "Bui Doi" from miss saigon. Its great because it has a few 16 bar clips in it that have a Begginning, Middle and End.
I also had recent success with "I'm not wearing underwear today." Avenue Q. It was an experiment. I thought it was great because its exactly 16 bars. Well none the less it got me to callbacks at a semi prof.

I got my first lead singing "Good Morning Baltimore" from Hairspray.
I kind of, sort of completely rocked it too, considering I changed songs 5 times while I was waiting for my turn. Normally I would try for something less campy and peppy... but hey... it turned out for the better.
it was kind of funny... when I walked out, someone who had heard me sing came up and said "why can't you be fat!". It took me a few minutes before I realized that was a compliment.

I don't like to give away the songs I currently use for a variety of reasons, but an old one I had success with was 'I Feel Pretty.' My only guess why is that it's actually not done that much anymore and that it might have been a breath of fresh air for casting directors - one legit singer in an ocean of high belters.

I'm a soprano and I got my first larger role (not counting school plays) with Johnny One Note.

I love that song! Got the lead in my grade 9 play with it. I especially love the line "the rats on the street dance around my feet"

Successful auditon songsFor musical theatre I've had great luck with Anthem from Chess, If Ever I Would Leave You form Camelot, Maria from West Side Story, Heaven on Their Minds from JC Superstar, I Need to Know and Alive from Jekyll & Hyde, and Begin the Beguine from Jubilee.
Operatically, the Toreador Song from Carmen, Largo al factotum from Barber of Seville and Se vuol ballare from Marriage of Figaro have all been job-getters for me. Along with Avaunt de qutter from Faust and the Pirate King's song from Pirates of Penzance.

A Cockeyed Optimist from South Pacific
are both standards of mine for mezzo semi-belt parts.

I made it into the musical theater program at my university with On My Own. Back then I was such a newbie, but amazingly I still made it through despite my song choice.

I sang "Sensetivity" from Once Upon a Mattress and got Fred.
No joke.
It shouldn't have happened.
