stupid question...really embarrassed but...
is there a difference between "Chava" and "Little Chava"? I've never actually SEEN Fiddler on the Roof. is there some kind of a flashback scene with a younger Chava, or are they the same character? I have seen both on people's resumes. I'm so confused!
thanks

Chava has a ballet sequence, but that's a dream, not a flashback. I've also heard her being called Chavalah, which is really just a nickname.

"Chavaleh", I've been told by my director, is the yiddish equivilent to calling someone named "Grace", "Gracie". It's an endearing nickname...like Anne to Annie, etc. You get the point.
There's no "flashback", but the Chava sequence is sometimes treated as Tevye thinking about the past...for example, I dance with my mother and sisters, and then leave with Fyedka (I describe it better in the Chava...dance thread). Don't worry though, they won't bring another little Chava or anything on stage, haha.

many times the dance sequence is done in sillouette so if chava doesnt dance they can bring in a "dance chava" for the sequence.

so... if someone put "Little Chava" on their resume, a director would assume that they played the role of Chava? that's all?

as a director I wouldnt asume that. I'd asume she did the Little Chavelah dance.

I'm not a trained dancer so when I played Chava the choreographer used a young girl to play "Little Chavelah."
However when I played Tzeitel in another production the director had Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava all come out and do a little waltz type dance and then we were wisked away one at a time by our respective husbands.
The movie had Tzeitle, Hodel and Chava dancing together.

i always assumed "chava" was the nickname that everyone used, and "chavalah" was her full, formal name. of course, i'm probably totally wrong

We had a Jewish studies professor come and talk to our cast, and I was told this:
Her name is "Chava", but when he is calling her "Chavaleh", it's the english equivilent to calling someone named "Anne", "Annie". A little suffix at the end, it's an endearing term. Same principle as in spanish when they at -ita or -ito at the end to mean something little and dear.
Get it? Kinda? It made a lot more sense when I heard that.

Allie is completely correct about Chavelah being an endearing nickname for Chava.
