Strongest melody/piece in Cats... besides "Memory."
My favourite song has to be "Deutoronomy." It's such a wonderful melody and I sung it as a lullabye to my campers when I was a counselor.
I'm also a fan of "Gumbie," mainly because of the changes in style, time signature and overall pizazz of the number.
"Grizabella" is a very haunting tune.
Thoughts?

Ohhh, difficult one that. I think it has to be either the Moments of Happiness or Deuteronomy. Moments of Happiness has some amazing discords which meld in so beautifully with the overall melody. Deuteronomy has those gorgeous harmonies in the chorus, and I think it is one of the most characterized peices in the show, but in a more subtle way than some of the others.

I personally like "Mungojerrie & Rumpleteazer" just because it's so much fun all around - to watch, to perform, to sing in the car...
Tied with that one would be "Macavity", for much the same reason. Plus, it's nice 'n jazzy.
For harmony, I'd have to say I like "Old Deuteronomy" and the choir part in "Jellicle Songs For Jellicle Cats" best.

THE LOVELY LITTLE THEME THAT PLAYS THROUGHOUT, IT'S AT THE BEGINNING OF 'UP TO THE HEAVISIDE LAYER' AND IS ALSO PLAYED DURING THE LATER MR. MISTOFFELEES CHORUSES. USUALLY PLAYED BY THE HORN SECTION! ANYONE KNOW WHAT I'M ON ABOUT?
I ALSO LOVE OLD DEUTERONOMY.
(SORRY ABOUT THE CAPITALS, MY CAP-LOCK KEY IS STUCK DOWN )

Gus: The Theatre Cat. I think that song's prettier than Memory. And the lyrics only add to the charm.
And yup, I know exactly what you're talking about Enkeli. You described it pretty well. Hope your cap-lock gets fixed soon. Wouldn't that be awkward if you were stuck typing in capitals for the rest of your life? You would be talking about regular cats and people would be all "CATS? You mean the musical?" It just occured to me that I've started to ramble again... *sigh*

My favourite song in Cats is definately "Old Deuteronomy". I love male voices, and it's such a beautiful duet.
The most fun song, I think, is "Skimbleshanks: the Railway Cat". And the tune most likely to be caught in your head as you walk down the street? The chorus to "The Magical Mister Mistoffelees", of course.

I don't know if it has a name but for me the best melody is the signature tune for CATS. I love how the tune falls and rises and when played by a full symphony, it just gives me chills . I'd say it is as good as the JCS signature tune when played by an orchestra.
A really good rendition of it appears on the Broadway CATS Highlights CD at the end of the (abbreviated) "Jellicle Ball". Both "Jellicle Ball" and "Memory" on the Highlights CD are different than the OBC recording.

I also love "Macavity" its so haunting and well put together..I also like "Mister Mistoffeles" and "Grizabella" is very sad..especially the way it's done onstage.
