String of PearlsSorry if there was already a post on this, but..
I'm secretary of my school's book club, and we're deciding on our next book. Some really annoying girl keeps pushing String of Pearls because of Sweeney and she swears she's like the biggest fan (funny how that's only been so since the movie came out... *stabs her*).
Basically, my question is.. is it worth the read?
How different is it from the musical... other than the music part.

Okay. Strip away any of the "shades of gray." Sweeney is just bad. He kills people to steal their stuff. Cut the Judge, the Beadle, Johanna, Lucy, and Pirelli. Make Anthony something of a dithering idiot trying to solve these crimes.
Ta-Dah.
It's not a bad read, just not the Sweeney we all know and love.

Actually, Johanna's in there...she's just not Sweeney's daughter.
I've started reading it just recently and it's pretty good. So I'd say that it's worth a shot.

Well, I can probably get into the style with no problem... but it is quite old, and I don't know how comfortable people will be with it.

"CUT the Judge..."
I like a good pun. Now back on subject!
(Which I know nothing about... sorry.)

Sweeney Hyde

Are we talking the play version of "A String of Pearls" or the original penny dreadful series?
I know relatively little about the play...however I just read the book.
I loved it.
It's very very different from the Sweeney Todd invented by Christopher Bond, Stephen Sondheim, and Hugh Wheeler.

The Bond version is what I want to read. The String of Pearls we're wonderign about is by Thomas Peckett Prest.
Oh, and thanks to Joshua for correcting my mistake

I'm reading it right now and I love it. It's different from the Sweeney we know, but it's still wonderful especially if you love classics like I do (the style of writing is so clever, IMO)
and if you have a strange fascination with insane men of that time period (like me)
I talked about it before in the "real" Sweeney Todd thread:
It's really interesting to see the differences/similarities to the Sweeney we know.
For example, that Sweeney has crazy hair, like Depp, in which he keeps his combs and, some say, his razors.
And he has a strange barking laugh like Len Cariou's in A Little Priest (after the line about the beadle)
