stop bigging up the lion king

dont get me wrong, the lion king has fantastic set and costumes and the whole concept is really good- but really- its not as special as people make it out to be, its very similar to the disney film i felt, and i was not a fan of timon and pumba.

ALSO DIDNT LIKE HOW SCAR WAS WHITE..what? just cause hes a baddy? how racist! anyway im chatting about the west end production, i assume the broadway is similar!
rockyrocks666

i have to agree. it was a good show and i really enjoyed it, but it wasnt a fantastic show. im not bothered about seeing it again. the costumes were un deniably amazing and the sets were very clever, but the rest was very average. i cant say i approve of all these disney shows... isnt tarzan one now? lol. i didnt think much of beauty and the beast either. they have the budget, but when it comes down to it, they're based on cartoons.
diva!

glad u agree with me rockyrocks666...i am new here Smile
rockyrocks666

us english have our heads on tight.
diva!

are we a minority here?
rockyrocks666

yeh, i think so, a little bit... i feel like old scar
Nicely-Nicely

Well I think The Lion King is special because of how the production team did it. I mean it's hard and challenging to do a musical with characters that are animals, you know?
rockyrocks666

yeah, its clever and 'special' but its by no means an AMAZING show
diva!

The way its done is fantastic dont get me wrong..but i personally feel thats the only thing it has going for it.

the beginning was the best bit for me
rockyrocks666

nah... the stampeed!

Yes, it does.

You mean the Disney film upon which it is based? That actually happens sometimes with adaptions...don't you hate it when the creative team maintains the source material's continuity?

lol.
The_Wicked

Um... so maybe I'm a COMPLETE freak here but... I like the music. Call me crazy but I think it is very good.
rockyrocks666

*shrugs* its all right
it fits better to the movie i think
Fantine

It is based off the movie so how can you expect it to be different? I thought it was very different btw...

Not that you can take anyone serious when using spelling like that.
rockyrocks666

its got nothing to do with spelling. i cant take you seriously when you push someone elses opinion aside because of spelling. get a grip
diva!

Re: stop bigging up the lion king

too right!

its ok rockyrocks ive noticed fantine being rude/acting like she's better in other forums here as well. the only reason she requests correct spelling is because shes so dumb she can't understand it otherwise.

Nice comment there. Unfortunately you hardly managed to create much input to the topic.

By the way i dont think there is anything wrong with observing that scar is one of the only white cast members- i think it is racist (it appears in the film Honey too but dont get me started on that :p) but any way we aren't discussing racism here.

it appears that u give simple criticisms of a musical and people go mad.
i already said how well it was done!

If she is "too dumb" to comprehend, then surely she wouldn't notice the crap spelling. So stop being an idiot, and correct your spelling without complaint.

I'm sorry, I still can't get my head around the fact that "she's too dumb to understand". Wow.

It's a bloody white man! Get Over It! What the hell difference does it make? It's not racist. Geez!
The_Wicked

People, is this any way to start a new year. Have compassion. The Lion King is a cat. Not a dog so appreciate that... Did it work? My RENT referral? Even if it didn't, that's okay. But this is obviously just going to accelerate to where someone either gets kicked off or goes and sets the Broadway production of the Lion King on fire... Make love not war. I am so damn cold I am going insane.
rockyrocks666

lol- love the rent refrence. i think the scar being white thing was partly humour, so lighten up a little guys. but seriously, it is odd that he's white...

Stop acting like a twelve year old.
rockyrocks666

LMAO chill out fantine
jadenbelle

I think the only reason Scar is usually played by a white guy is to try to imitate as much of Jeremy Irons' performance in the movie
rockyrocks666

... thats a good point Smile
Fantine

Maybe Scar is played by a white actor to emphasize the difference between the 'good' lions and the 'evil' ones?
Colle

I enjoyed the "Lion King," I would probably rate in somewhere in my top five favorite shows. I am white and I was not offended that Scar was played by a white man, though I can see why some might be.

I am curious, has anyone seen a black man play Scar?
rockyrocks666

FANTINE YOUR SO STUPID! thats the whole point of the comment you mug. why is scar white to show evil, thats racist!!! do you understand now? GEEZ!

I think the Gazelle tour featured a black Scar.

That's enough, rockyrocks. Seriously, you're trying to start an argument over the Lion King. Think about that for a sec.

<3 Fantine
rockyrocks666

lol, nah, shes just bein stupid really. she cant have a go at me for spelling when she doesnt even understand the discussion
diva!

LOL im beginning to utterly lack respect for a lot of people on this board.

HARDLY ANYBODY can take criticisms of musicals! im sorry but it just seems to me like a lot of you guys like any musical full stop. you dont take the time to notice their flaws and have a discussion about them

i realise not everyone is like this and i apologise to those who aren't, but it seems to me like people are swaying from the original intention of the post.

fantine- this is not about spelling, what if one of us has learning difficulties, then how would u feel if u just told somebody they cant spell!

THINK before you do things like that- or better yet dont do them at all and focus on the topic!

SO ...no i dont ACTUALLY think it was racist, it was partly humour about scar being white. however surely it is racist if white people are used to show an evil character?

PS it is people like Colle who i respect on this board. they put forward their view without starting an argument..thanks for ur (oh sorry...YOUR*) input Colle Smile
The_Wicked

Come on guys! Chill! Agree to disagree agreeably. This topic isn't about racism, it's about The Lion King being overrated (which I disagree with btw). I have seen a black scar and I have seen a white Simba and Zazu is usually white. I don't think there is much of a hidden meaning behind this casting. Make peace and go eat a peanut butter cookie. They always make you feel better. Have a nice day!
The_Wicked

So definately the above post didn't show on my computer until just now. Well put, diva!
rockyrocks666

lol- im allergic to peanuts.
but yeh, diva is right
RyanJ

ok, well I'm going to make a post on-topic.

I like the Lion King. I think it's a great musical, I'd recommend it to anyone. Racist or not, however, I think it's very common for almost all the lead roles to be played by blacks. It just seems natural. It's hard for me to explain, and if it's racist, then fine, but race does play a role in casting some shows.

I can see why people would get tired of the constant praise for a show. I'm tired of people making Phantom seem like some kind of masterpiece. I didn't find it too good, and I thought the music was boring. But still, whatever floats your boat.
The_Wicked

Allergic to peanuts?! No wonder you were mad! M&M cookies are good then too. So I'm gonna be a hypocrate and deviate from the subject a little... does anyone know of another cast recording of the Lion King? Like a UK cast or a tour cast or something? I want to actually hear another Simba besides Jason Raize (although I love him more than anything in the world ever).
diva!

yeah i mean i wasnt offended, and obviously a majorly black cast is sort of intergral- it IS set in africa. i was just joking really- but it does bring up some issues. which we've discussed to death so i will drop it now!

glad to see some people agree. its not BAD. i dont claim it to be BAD. but overrated is all! Very Happy
The_Wicked

Ryan J. I could kiss you. I won't but I could. Phantom is very overrated in my opinion too. Regardless, I am happy there is peace on this board once again.

Riiiight.

diva! wrote:

Why don't YOU think about things before you open your mouth? All I said was that use of correct spelling makes people want to take you more seriously.

I don't see Scar being Caucasian as being racist either. If you look at it that way, a Caucasian actress could say: "Hey but I want to play Nala!" And then the directors tell you that you can't because they need black people and then you could find that racist as well. I think that you should be happy that there are at least 3 (was it? Pumbaa, Timon and Scar?) characters played by Caucasian males. And not because of racism, but because there is still a chance for a Caucasian actor to be a part of this musical.

And it's true, popular musicals are often overrated. Les Mis, Cats, POTO, Lion King... But what can you do?
rockyrocks666

im not twelve actually, if ur gunna say it check it out first!
rockyrocks666

fantine, stop being a loser. you just cant take it coz u know that you didnt understand. and i couldnt give a shit about my spelling or anything like that, at least i know what i'm talking about

Exactly.
RyanJ

You not only seem like a 12 year old on the boards, but your credits include to the best of my knowledge mostly child roles. It would make plenty of sense if you were in fact a 12 year old whose parents don't know is on the internet.
rockyrocks666

either way a twelve year old isnt an 'its'
i have played lots of younger roles, because i played them when i was a bit younger. so what? there are also older credits on there aswell, it dont bother me.
my posts arent like a 12 year old, its just annoying to be dissed for your own opinion when the person doesnt really understand what your opinion, or even part of the discussion actually is.
i didnt come here to be rude, but i thought that the spelling comment was a bit rude and i wasnt rude at all before that.
and i do actually know what im talking about, thank you very much

Because I did express my point of view on the show.
diva!

ur right, u did express a view. which is perfectly fine.

didnt need the sarcastic comment about spelling afterwards though did you?
B3TA07

Hey now, .

You still need reminders of how to spell simple words, it would seem.
rockyrocks666

but is that really relavent (dont care if i spelt it wrong) ?
B3TA07

It is indeed relevant.
rockyrocks666

like i said, i couldnt care less! you're just being pathetic now! i dont come on forums and spell check everything before i post. im not here for spelling, im here because i like musicals.

OKAY Fantine:

Spelling mistake one-
Fantine wrote:

LIKE, OMGGGG!!@!@#!!!!11

surely "OMG" (used to stand for "oh my god") has only one G. with the use of four G's it would stand for "Oh My God God God God"...which isn't right?

Spelling mistake two-

Spelling mistake three-
Fantine wrote:

For somebody who find spelling so important on this board- you appear to be a slight hypocrite.
not that spelling really DOES have anything to do with the Lion King.

I think maybe i find the Lion King over-rated is because we have had the film for so long, and we know the songs so well, i just want something a bit different when i go to the theatre. I actually think the disney movie is overrated as well...so that clouds my vision too Smile

Overrated?

Fantine wrote:

How can Cats and Phantom possibly be overrated? Not only did both shows get mostly bad reviews from the critics, but how many times is someone somewhere trying to claim that they're bad shows? Pretty much all the time I would say. If you don't personally like those two musicals then you might think that is the way it should be (I would disagree) but it would be untrue to claim that they're overrated.
The_Wicked

Phantom and CATS are both RIDICULOUSLY Overrated. Your statement is quite contradictory MusicFan because you say that they cannot be overrated but that is indeed your opinion... so... some people big up these shows and while you feel that they may be worhty of such praise, others will feel that they don't deserve it. It's all in opinions. Such as my opening sentance. See? It's all in the eye of the beholder.
MusicFan

The_Wicked wrote:

My statement isn't contradictory. These shows got bad reviews. That's a fact, not an opinion. Overrated shows get good reviews... like the Producers.

I never said anything against anyone not liking the shows. I simply pointed out that they're not overrated. Overrated is not the same thing as "popular".

It's a bit pointless to get so angry about what someone says on a forum. After all, what difference does any of this make in the great scheme of things? Stay cool.

Mia

Diva, I know it's a bit off topic but I really wanted to ask if you saw the show in West End lately, with Brian Makiwane in the role of adult Simba, cause I remember my sister introducing us in Los Angeles (they were both part of the cast). I heard he's in London now and my sis used to tell me he's such a great vocalist.
rockyrocks666

i saw the show in the west end a couple of months ago, but i dont have a cast list for it Crying or Very sad what does he look like, coz i have a souvenier brochure. diva saw it like a year or two ago.
Mia

Aw...I think he's been there since 2003 or so...I just remember he had tiny dreadlocks back then but I guess those must have grown now...he actually was (is) a normal dark skinned guy with a really special smile Wink. He plays adult Simba, I checked the homepages and I found it (how smart am I Wink Wink ). Now I think I will have to go see it in London Very Happy
LoneWanderer

Crap...the argument is over. Not gonna lie, I read through this thread looking forward to being able to poke some fun...as too many easy to poke fun of things were said.

Anywho...as far as phantom and cats being overrated, though I would question thing thing regarding getting bad reviews, they are widly loved. They are not deserving of such love and popularity, as there are many better shows out there. Thus, overrated. Everyone in my school who doesnt know many musicals but knows a few LOVES phantom...and cats...and rent...and wicked. None of those shows are deserving of all the fandom at all.
MademoiselleMusicals

Well the Lion King looks good - i would go see it for the costumes and make up for sure. Very Happy

hahahahahhahhaha. well first of all, make sure you know if Scar was white..caucasian, or Asian. And whattttt? Your saying its racist for the production to have Scar "white"? Yes, he's a bad guy. And he's run down and evil. Being "white" compared to others in the show who are african will give off that effect. Although, if they wanted a different feel, they could change it up and have a african actor. Whatever. Its not racism.
And even if it was, shut up. I'm pretty sure that "white" people have done enough to "black" people that they have every right to be a little racist every now and then.
But it wasnt racism.
broadwaybelle22

That is not racism. Jeez, people need to stop overanalysing things and just learn to enjoy stuff for what it is.
ald24601

Not only that, there is the issue with some of the songs being in african llanguages. i know a few are in Zulu, and a few sections are in xhosa, a click language.
Gwen

Sheesh....
Has anyone seen the extra features on the lion king dvd? They have some pretty cool stuff on it.
Cats, Wicked, Lion King, and Rent being overrated?
Well, I'm a Cats fan, but I'm not being biased when I say I don't think it's overrated. Wicked I think is over-rated, but not Rent. Lion King...I would say it's pretty good- even if it is Disney. (And Lion King is my favorite Disney movie anyway, but still....)
