Staging question.

Okay... I saw it on June 6th in Sac.

How does the stageing for "Stranger than You Dreamt It" normally go? I might have seen a phlub, but I don't know. I was my first time see it live.
mastachen

A flub?

Why don't you tell us what you saw, and we can let you know if that was how it was supposed to go? It seems to be easier that way. lol
Phantom On A Budget

On the off chance you're referring to the Phantom falling to the floor, that is indeed part of the blocking.
Vice

Wel.. he ran stage right, fell, and crawled (Well... more so dragged... It was a full flat body drag.) himself over to Christine in tune to the major beat of "Stranger than you drempt it". I saw something fly in that direction, but it wasn't the mask.
Paula74

Probably his little Mandarin hat - it comes off when Christine takes the mask.
futuremsdaae

You saw something fly in what direction? When? lol

I saw something fly off stage right right when he was unmasked, but I had actually not seen the hat too well from where I was sitting. (Really, REALLY far away... grrrrr.... Second balcony. Right in front of the $20 nosebleed seats.) I'd actually forgotten completely about the hat... ^^;

I'm just curious, because... the dragging himself on stage bit was actually rather humourous... which didn't really go with the scene...

I actually kinda like the idea.. I like when he crawls slowly to her, not so much "dragging" though. I kinda see what you mean. But at that point he has totally lost his tight reign on his controlled emotions. It is complete desperation. To me it works, it's total melodrama, but isnt that what makes the show so great? Wink

I mean it works... but I just think it was that particular night. It was VERY stilted. It was funny... and I kinda felt bad for snickering, because it is such a important scene. (Although I did like it better than OMG-angst-RAWR!Movie!Erik in that scene. He was very self-pitying and humble, which I think suits the character BEAUTIFULLY.)

I can see him crawling... but he was LITERALLY dragging himself.

On a totally unrelated note, The costume in that scene maded me go Shocked when I saw it. Its . . . . different.

Same here. The first time I saw it the Phantom's costume in that scene made me laugh.
mezzo_soprano

I liked the movie costume for that scene better. and Christine's movie PONR dress better.
Vice

Mmm... I fond of that Costume. (I want one.) I like the oriental robe.

Must... Not... Costume rant...
Mungojerrie_rt

I want his costume on the stage for "Why So Silent?" So cool.
shakalakababy

i saw it sacramento too.

I hated the phantom dragging himself across the floor thing. my friend and i were laughihng because it just looked so ridiculous. I hated the actor who played the phantom anyways though. they might alternate though so we might of seen two different ones.
Mungojerrie_rt

The two bits I couldn't help but laugh at were the whole "You have come here!" The way he played the organ and turned to sing at Christine was so ridiculus. The other bit was his firey stick in the graveyard. "Come closer! Come closer!" "No Raul! It's a tick!"

I liked this Phantom. But I do agree, it was just so... silly looking. (I felt so bad for lauging too...)
Quique

Maybe it looks silly from the nosebleed section, but it's actually one of my favorite scenes.

The way the Phantom is lit from stage left with that light blue spot. Loves it.

And the crawling isn't too ridiculous, considering he's just had his identity ripped away from him. It's a very poignant scene. Actually, one of the few poignant scenes in the show.

It's my one of my favourite scenes as well. I was just caught off guard by it.

May I please say that Hal Prince is a genius?

Well if it's Stephen R. Buntrock (one of the old broadway understudies) it takes a hell of alot of will power not to laugh. Not even dragging but *hand, up, flop. hand, up, flop* It was like watching a one armed fish with a really good voice try to flop it's way to water. . . albiet dramatically.

Other than him, everyone else I've seen do it is very dramatic and it fits. I love the scene. But as much as Buntrock was one of my all time favorite phantoms, he was very silly in that scene. No crawling. Legs straight out in back of him, merely along for the ride. Right arm over his face as the left assisted in flopping one-armed pushups. Did look rather strong however, doing it. -shrug-

Is his wig supposed to come off at that point, too? When I saw it, it looked like it was a wig, but I wasn't sure, since he still had pretty much the same hair, and I thought, well, maybe it is supposed to come off, though I can't imagine what difference it'd make, but... *deep breath* it was still onstage in the next scene and Carlotta kicked it off while she was throwing a tantrum.

well i'm talking about the way the actor did it in sacramento. I've seen the phantom two other times besides this (both were in orchestra seats) and i never had a problem with it. I just thought this particular phantom overacted it and exagerrated it too much (the crawling and well everything) so it really was ridiculous

Heh, when I saw it something small fell down from the rafters during Notes. It stayed there for a while until Piangi kicked it off subtley.

No, the wig isn't supposed to come off until the end of Point of No Return. Perhaps you saw the hat left on stage?
