Spring Musical

I'm going to be a freshman this year and I believe we are doing the music man. I've never auditioned before and I was wondering what goes into the process. I was just planning on being one of the kids, and was also wondering if they sing any songs. I'm totally new to this whole thing, since well...my town doesn't really have a community theatre.

Well, obviously, you're going to be asked to sing at your audition. Some directors are satisfied with one song; some ask for two - one slow and one fast. Whatever the requirements, choose songs that show off your voice at it's best.

You'll also be asked to read something. You may be asked to prepare something ahead of time; you may have to read something from the play without much/any preparation. (This is what's known as a 'cold' reading.) This gives the director a chance to see how well your personality interacts with those of the other auditionees, see what character/s would be best suited to you, and who might be best for each role.

Most of the major dancing goes to the main characters, if I recall correctly, though almost everyone is involved in the 'Shipoopi' number. The library scene is more cadenced walking than actual dancing, though there may be some fancier stuff for some featured performers. As for singing, everyone's involved in 'The Wells Fargo Wagon' and the '76 Trombones' reprise.

That's just off the top of my head. For a better run-down, check the movie.

Don't be shy when you audition. You may be nervous, but do your best. You may be pleasantly surprised and get a larger role than you'd hoped. Also, depending on how many folks audition, you may get to do more than one role, as long as they don't over-lap. For instance, the travelling salesmen on the train (with the exception of Harold Hill and Charlie Cowell) may double as Mayor Shinn, the School Board members, students, etc.

Good luck with your audition. And, whatever role you land, play it for all it's worth. Each role is important, or it wouldn't have been included.
