Spring Awakening Lyric question?

In the song My Junk in the musical Spring Awakening what do they mean by we all have our junk and my junk is you?
mastachen

If you replace the word "junk" with "obsession" or "fantasy" the song would make a lot more sense. I don't know if that's actually right, but it's my interpretation of the lyrics.

oh ok that helps. haha thanks i realy appreciate the help.
Ariel

It's a song about having a huge crush on someone. So the person they have a crush on is their "junk."

Just my opinion, but SA is very weak lyrically. Half of the lyrics don't make sense to me.

i agree with that yet the music is great most of the time

I kinda like the fact the the lyrics dont make sense sometimes.
Because dont teenagers not make sense sometimes?

like that last sentence for example hahaha
my junk is loveee <333

I always took the phrase "My Junk" to mean that the girls were addicted to these boys. Not necessarily, addicted to them but addicted to the feeling they get when they are around them.. Just like Junk is a slang term for heroin or any drug really, I took it to mean that.

Also, the last line is "My junk is you. My junk is you. You. You. You."

I like that Smile

I think the thing I dislike most about the lyrics is how little justice they do to the script for the play it was based off of. I read the play and I was stunned that that music could come out of that script. "Mama Who Bore Me" is a perfect opening, but Melchoir raped Wendla in the original play. That's a huge difference to me. Also, there is no mention of Martha's father sexually abusing her, just physically beating her, etc.

I noticed that you're a Wicked fan. How much justice do you think Wicked's songs did to the original novel?

*I'm not trying to be an asshole, just pointing out what I find ironic in what you said. *

True.
I like Spring Awakening, the musical and the book, and I like Wicked, the musical and the book, but just both versions of both stories are very different.

I love the idea of all these pop songs, thrown in a very tense and abstract script.

When I first listened to the musical, I did no research of it-- and I found it by chance... and I thought, "This is a modern musical set in modern times." I couldnt figure out by listening to the soundtrack what it was about, but I knew it had a cool sound to it...so I loved it. And then I looked into it, and thought-- "How could this be set in Germany at the turn of the century?" As more time and time went on, And when I finally read the script to the Musical and the Play I understood the author's intent.

The lyrics may be a little weak, but they are written for young people. I think some of the images that are painted in the lyrics are absolutely beautiful in my opinon. For example "Dont Do Sadness"-- it so rich metaphorically. Also "Song of Purple Summer" is that way.

As for "My Junk" I have a very hillarious story-- In my friend's theatre dept. there is a girl that is VERY conservative, and she heard the song and freaked out--and asked why were listening to songs about drugs. And my friend told her that it wasnt about drugs...but sometimes love can be so addicting it can be like a drug. And she said, "God is not drugs."-- and everyone looked puzzled. And my friend asked her what she meant... And she said, "God is love--and God is not drugs." So-- anytime I hear "My Junk" now-- I follow up with, "God is not drugs."

Hmmm...interesting quote.

That's what I love about Spring Awakening is that you can interpret the lyrics many different ways so everyone in the audience gets an experience that is unique to them and moves them

I find it funny how a lot of people don't realize how "My Junk" is based on obsession, love and masturbation. Well people who see the show don't at least.

"I go up to my room, turn the stereo on…
Shoot up some you, and the you is some song."

"They say you go blind... maybe its true"

And then all the other songs xD
From "Bitch of Living" is my favorite line from the show, or one of them at least:
“Give me that hand, please, and the itch you can’t control.
Let me teach you how to handle all the sadness in your soul.
Oh, we’ll work that silver magic,
Then we’ll aim it all the wall.”
She said, “Love may make you blind, kid, but I wouldn’t mind at all.”
and:
It's the bitch of living (bitch, just the bitch)
Nothing but your hand (just the bitch, yeah)

I love Spring Awakening. So much. I just saw it, and am obsessed. From what I had heard, it distanced itself a lot from Wedekind's original play, but it didn't! I've read the original play twice, and the musical adhered to it very well, and it was just as moving as the original play is.
