Speed of the ChandelierJust watching the documentary of POTO on the DVD and I was wondering (since I know you folks come from all over the world), how fast does the chandelier fall in your country? Stilgoe says it falls at different paces in different countries and I find that absolutely fascinating. I'm most interested in the Hungarian production since it's different from all the other productions. BTW, any new non-replica productions planned? I've heard about a possible production in Poland. What about Iceland, France, or Norway? Just wondering.
Thanks,
Ty

Not too fast... too many safety laws. It crashes the fastest in Australia, I believe, with the second fastest being in London... and it was bloody awesome in London! No one caught the chandelier the night we saw it, however, so it literally hung there swinging back and forth over our heads... it was brilliant!

I remember when I saw Phantom last month, right before the the Chandelier hit the stage, (right before the big burst of pyrotechnics) a techie ran out to catch it. I know it's supposed to happen, but I thought it was funny that I could actually see him; he ran out just a split second too soon.
Slightly off topic, but it reminded me.

Yes, although I didn't see the show, I know heaps who did, and they all tell me it was ridiculously fast. My parents were sitting down the front and felt they needed to duck.

Spain also had a speedy chandelier drop. And Denmark too. In Denmark they also had this bad habit of letting the chandelier hit the stage in a slightly brutal manner... I always though it was a mishap, but it happened every time. heh. Made the whole deal sound and look very realistic - but that chandelier must have been a little damaged after three years....
In general, it all depends on the height of the ceiling of the auditorium. High ceiling = speedy chandelier. This is most noticeable in the US tour, where the chandelier can be both rather slow and quite speedy.
Another important factor is how solid the ceiling actually is. One of the reasons why it falls so slowly on Broadway is because the ceiling is old and not too strong, and though it has been enforced more than once they have to keep the speed down to make the fall as easy as possible for the roof. So it's not only strict safety rules, it depends a lot of what theatre POTO is performed in.

I didn't notice a techie catching it! I think it fell kinda slow still (London).
I'm quite sure that POTO won't be coming back here (the Netherlands) for awhile.

When I saw the show it fell really, REALLY slow, so slow in fact that it was kind of amusing. It just all of a sudden started floating down, and it cracked me up. I already knew the storyline from having read the libretto and hearing the soundtrack so many times, so I knew it was going to happen, and I expected a fall, not a float.

operafantomet, That Denmark version sounds good! At least the crash would look realistic, wheras some small fireworks and it landing on the stage gently doesnt usually look amazing...
tylerd, How is the Hungarian Version different? That intrigues me!

Come to think of it, it was actually really slow when I saw it in Denver last month. Both times. The ceiling of the Buell is pretty low.

I found it quite impresseing, at least. The crash was so loud I each time thought it was a mishap. But after seeing the production 10+ times, i realized it was on purpose....
The Hungarian chandelier hangs more over the stage than out in the auditorium. Imagine them turning the perspective as done after "Think of Me" - suddenly you're backstage (with a very good set illuding the auditorium). The bowing "Il Muto" cast has their backs to the real audience. And then the chandelier down on stage, looking like it fell down from the auditorium. Does that makes sense? Here's a picture to show the set:

I recently saw the show and the chandeleir came down very slowly. I would have been surprised once it did come, except a woman in front of me yelled "Here it comes" very loudly and took the surprise away too. It was my first time as well. *sigh*

WOAH! That's so cool! I thought for a minute that someone had taken the photo from the back of the stage looking out into the auditorium. That's really cool.

I saw the show in london twice. Several yeas apart. It was much slower the second time. Perhaps a change in the safety laws.

Since the speed of the Tour's Chandeleir differs from theatre, I was wondering if anyone saw Phantom in Toronto when it played at the Pantages (now Canon) theatre. How fast was the toronto production on a scale of 1 - 10 (1 being the slowest) so I have a good idea what to expect in March next year.
